NEWS ITEMS FRO JI ANNA.
t
BY OWEN.
Editor Bulletlu:
Thinking perhaps a few lines from Anna
might not bo uninteresting to some of
your readers, I thought I would venture
a few.
Of course everybody knows Anna, and
where it is, und all tho points of interest
hereabouts, so it will be useless for me to
go into ccstacies and raptures about tho
green fields; the grand old hills; the beau
tiful streams; the shady vallie9 and other
things so delightful for a country corrcs
pondent to "dish up" to folks who don't be
lieve a word he says.
Our harvest just finished is the heaviest
known for many years, ami in spite of the
wise "hcadshakes" and knowing predic
tious of the '"chronic grumblers" the yield
will be very heavy.
Strawberries this year, although not so
large a crop, have paid the producer
more net profits than for for several years
Prices ruled much higher than usual, and
they have the advantage of fewer cases,
lower rates and cheaper labor 30 taken al
together the producer is happy.
uaspoernes seem to Do in
abundance oa every side. tu
much so that they are down to famine
prices. I saw the other day the choicest
red raspberries selling at $1.50 per 24
quart case.
Oats, which a month ago were thought to
be an absolute failure, are now unlike the
"Grant movement" "booming."
Anna has always been noted for its
healthy location, more so than any other
place on the Illinois Central (Cairo of
course e.cepted)but now it is so much so,that
one of our M. D's has had to start a country
newspaper, and our druggists are unable to
sell anything but "bottle beer." However,
I if we have to take medicine at all I think
that about the most agreeable, if not the
most active.
Anna is out-doing all of her neighbors
in the way of improvements this year. Nine
brick stores are in process of erection, and
five more are under contract. Residence
buildings are being built here and there all
over town. Carpenters and bricklayers are
happy as a natural consequence.
Look out or Anna will be the capital at
Egypt instead of Cairo.
We had Robinson's 25 ct. show iu town
the other day, and, of course, the town was
full of rustic simplicity and inuocenee.
Buxoin country lassies with their strong ad
mirers, hand in hand, seeing the sights.
The inevitable slice of ginger ciko ac
companying them.
Mr. Editor, you don't know tho blisn
there is in being a country gallant who
comes to town to see the show. Every
body seems to be happy and eager to
squander his "quarter."
Our people think that the fourth of July
is a "darned sight" bigger man than St.
Patrick's day in the morning, and therefore
they are trying to celebrate it in a manner
becomlug tho importance of tho day. A
large and enthusiastic meeting was held
at I'ssery's Opera house, last Monday even
ing, und olllcers elected, committees ap
pointed, money subscribed and all the
11 wind work'Mone towards having a real
old-time barbecue Excursion rates are to
be hail on both roads and everybody is in
vited. The Union county fair grounds, at Jones
boro, have been engaged and money, cattle,
sheep, etc., enough subscribed
to feed everybody. The lair
grounds are iu splendid condition plenty
of shade ami water and near the depot.
Tho old .Toncsboro band has tendered its
aervices, and everything promises well.
There will bo square meal tor evorylxviy
free of mliargo (but don't tell the tramps.)
NEW SERIES NO. 311.
To end with, there will bo a grand ball
at the Winstead House, where all may en
joy themselves till train tlmo. Should our
Cairo friends come they will find that old
Joncsboro knows exactly how to do the
handsome thing in tho way of hospitality,
Anna ditto.
Lest I exhaust your patience and tire
your readers, I will bring this to a close.
If something turns up, perhaps I may in
trude again.
ELCO ITEMS.
BY T. W. H.
Editor Cairo Bulletlon:
Again we take up our pencil, to make a
fiieble effort to fulfil our promise.
Since our last communication nothing
ha3 occurred in our vicinity, of an exciting
character so far as I know, though I have
had a very poor chance to look up the items
ot news.
Tho house being built for tho Rev. Mr.
Giflbrd will be ready for him to occupy in a
few days. He was, as you will remember,
turned out of his home, last week; by tho
destruction of his house by fire
Mr. F. M. Carter is also rebuilding on tho
same ground where his house was burned.
ThoI.O. G. T.'s,of this and two adjoin
ing counties, have united in celebrating the
Fourth of July, at tho town of Mill-Creek,
three miles above this place, on the C. &
St. L. railroad. It is to be a basket pic
nic, and a table will be set upon tho
ground and all the provisions put upon it,
the people of EIco nearly all going, and a
good time is expected. Wo would all like
to see Cairo well represented at the above
time and place.
Elco Lodge, No. 043, of I. O. O. F.,
held their election at tho regular time for
electing officers. R. E. Norman was elected
N. G.; C. E. Miller, V. O.; Miles Caublc,
R. 8., and Edward Short, Treasurer.
Dr. Gibbs, of Thebes, paid us a visit last
week. He is a very affable and courteous
gentleman, and he informs us that he ex
pects to become a candidate for County
Commissioner of this county next fall. If
he does so, we can only say to him that he
will have many friends and strong sup
porters in this vicinity.
Mr. A. J. Alden was here a few days
ago, adjusting some assessments on real
estate. Every thing was satisfactorily ar
ranged. The Rev. Mr. Sprecher, tho county agent
for the American Biblo Society, has been
spending a few days in our town, and last
evening, after delivering a sermon on "tho
Bible as a civilizer," he reorganized the
Hazlewood branch of the American Bible
Society, at this place. Edgar Putnam was
elected treasurer and libarian, and Rev. G.
C. Jameson, secretary. Mr. Sprecher is a
good talker, and in his discourso he aid
not spare Ingersoll nor his colleagues, but
showed the fallacy of his story about
"Moses and the grasses.''
The farmers are all done cutting wheat
Some are stacking, others are preparing to
thresh wheat, and others are busy plowinjj
their corn. Crops of all kinds look well.
There has been some cholera , morbus
here, but health is very good now, and ev
ery body seems to be happy.

Having used Dr. Bull's Baby Syrup in
my family with the greatest degree of sat
isfaction, I unhesitatingly recommend it as
tho best rejnedy that I know of for child
ren. Thomas Y. Lawson.

these days, buy white butter, and dairymen
of good judgement use the Perfected Butter
