IMMIGEATI0X TO SOUTHERN ILLI
50IS. We give the following letter from Mr. E.
O. L. Edbolm, who is not unknown to our
citizens, and ask for it a careful reading
from such of our readerB as feel concerned
for the better development of the really
wonderful natural resources of SouthesrJ
Illinois. With our full townships of un
touched forests, limitless coal field?, rich
lead mines, kaolin deposits, salt wells to
say nothing of the productive soil and its
adaptability for the growth of the grain
and fruits ol either the North or the South
with all these advantages Southern Illi
nois might safely invite to her borders, and
to the work of developing her natural
wealth, two millions of people in addition
to her present population. Uow to attract
immigration bt'comcs,therefore, a subject of
first importance to us all. Having said
this we commend to the attention of whom
it may concern Mr. Edholm's letter, which
reads as follows:
Omaha, June 22d, 1679.
Mr. Barrel), Editor Bulletin:
From The Bulletin which I regularly
receive, I note the fact that you occasionally
urge upon the people of Southern Illinois
tbe necessity for a work of some kind to be
set on foot in order to turn immigration
into that part of the country. , 1 our sug
gestions have been so valuable that I have
taken tne liberty to quote tnem, giving due
credit, however, in my work of immigra
tion which I have prosecuted in this State for
some time, now, with the greatest success.
My labors m tins state will draw to a
close some time in the latter part of this
summer, and I have the satisfaction of
knowing that no other work of a similar
nature ever accomplished one-half as much
in the direction labored for as has this.
Hence, I am satisEe 1 it is a cood work, and
worked on the riht system. Of coui se the
worn is done through the press
Knowing as I do, what your country has
to offer in the way of inducements to agri
culturist 1 should not be viola
ting any law of morality, were I to
advise people to seek homes in southern
Illinois, as I consider that, in msny re
spects, a superior country to this. I think
too that the people of that section would
encourago a work of that kind. And I
think furthermore that The Cairo Bulle
tin, as a representative paper and having a
large circulation, would be the best me
dium wherewith to reach the public. I
am correspending with your heaviest busi
ness men and real 'estate dealers in regard
to the matter, and if all things look favor
able, 1 snail ere long maKC a proposition
to you, when I will fully explain my sys
tem, as I trust to your eminent satisfac
