THE TWO PLAGUES.
The United States statistics of internal
revenue show a great increase in the con
sumption of lager beer, which is becom
ing the beverage of the masses. The con
sumption is now nearly 1,000,000 barrels a
month, or something over 1 1,000,000 barrels
annually, or about eight gallons to every
inrJividual in the United States. The con
sumption of whisky does not appear to
have diminished in quantity. Its uses is

I ance reformer of Washington proposes
quaranting against it as well as against yel
low fever. The total number of deaths in
the United States from the plague during
the last ten years was 21,000, ot whom 14,-

A new comet is coming sit down, sit
down ; what's the use of getting excited?
It is only visible from the second peak of
Mount Aytchimboguatdalahasta.in Central
Asia, and only there with a three-story tel
escope, and then it is only visible twenty
minutes at midnight, and not then unless
the atmosphere is exactly right, and when it
is viable it only looks like a star about half
the size of the little one in Job's coffin. By
all the starry worlds that swing in space,
w hen "we" were a boy, the comets used to
come around every summer, with heads on
them like fire-balloons, and tails that
stretched from the big dipper to the south
ern cross, and wagged back and forth like a
bewildered torchlight procession, and came
so close to the earth that they put the moon
out. Out on these single-barreled comets,
three for a quarter, that they get up for us
in these degenerate modern days. we
would't walk from here to Asia to see a hun
dred of 'em. Scientific American.
