DR. EDGAR ON YELLOW FEVER.
A STATEMENT OK FACTS WORTHY OF ATTEN
TION THEORIES NOT VV1TE rO CONSE
QUENTIAL. Dr. D. E. Edgar, an old gentleman resi
dent of the neighboring town of Anna,
makes the following contribution to the
Yellow Fever literature ot the day; and we
publish it, not so much to eet the doctor's
"theories" Wfore tho public as to call atten
tion to his statement 'if the Inets. Very
few of our physicians will take issue with
the doctor's averment that "when carbon
excludes the oxygen of the atmosphere," a
very unhealthy state of affairs is morally
certain to ensuse. But here is the letter:
Assa, 111., July S3, 1870.
Editor of Tut Canto Bi'lletw.
Dear Sir. 1 wish to uiiikc a communi
cation through your paper in regard to yel
low fever, and its remedy.
the statemest of facts.
I will simply state what I saw in 18G4,
when I was on tho Island of San Domingo
I was on a, coll'uo plantation during the
whole of that year, and in August the yel
low fever broke out in the seaport landings
and became an epidemic and spread into
the interior. and even on the
sugar and coffee plantation, am'
when it reached the plantation in the parts
I was in tho natives commenced cuttiust
cord wood and putting up small chnrcoa'
pits, say one or two cords of wood, com
menced burning coal, and tho fever abated
on the plantation and in ten days there
was not a case of fever on tho plantation
and this process was adopted in all tho vil
lages, and thero was a population of sonio
two or. thrco thousand people, and at tho
time the coal pits woro put up in tho abovo
place tho mortality ranged from 30 to 33
deaths daily, and In seven days from th
time that ten coal pits commenced burning
in tho placo tho mortality was reduced to
five per day, and in four weeks thero was
not a caso of yellow to bo found In' tho ro
gion of tho Island. The coal pits wero put
up promiscuously through tho center ant
suburbs of tho village, and kept up occa
slonally until the 1st of October, and al
traces of fever were gone.
All of what I have written I was ryo
witness to. I did not reason, then, why the
burning of coal wss essential; but in fcw
yean past I have given this wbject aome
attention particularly laat year.
THE DOCTOR'S THEORY.
My rcasoni are these, that when we
Ireatbo all three of the gasea that are well
mixed, we are healthy. But when one of
three gases forma in a body and excludes
the other two, we must fall sick with some
disease (I mean carbon gas, hydrogen and
oxygen these are the three , gases I al
It is a well settled matter that when car
bon gas excludes oxygen and hydrogen
that it produces cholera. Hence when tho
hydrogen becomes a body sufficient to ex
clude tbe other two gases, a high state of
bilious disease sets in and finally terminates
in yellow fever and very soon becomes an
epidemic. Now, by tli W&ing of char
coal pits in the affected districts you intro
duce carbon gas to break the clouds of
hydrogen gas, and oxygen gas will follow
the carbon, and when there is
a sufficient quantity of carbon and oxygen
gases the cloud of hydrogen will bo broken,
and so soon as the three gasses become well
mixed, the epidemic will pass away.
DIRECTORY ASD AFFIRMATIVE.
I send ybuthis for you to publish for the
benefit of those who are suffering, and if
you think it not worth publibhing send it to
some of the Memphis papers.
I have seen a great many things through
life that at first appeared simple; but on in
vestigation was very useful. I am now go
ing on to seventy years of age, and have
ived in many localities in the' United
State, but never was in but the one mess of
yellow fever. Very Ito-pecttully,
. Dr. D. E. Edgar.
