THE EQUITABLE LIFE ASSURANCE
SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
MAKES THE FOLLOWING AXXOXCE
MEN T TO THE PUBLIC:
The dissatisfaction which prevails
throughout the community with regard to
oucrous conditions contained in life assur
ance contracts and ' the judicial decisions
based thereon, together with the public in
dorsement of tho liberal usages of this So
ciety, as shown by its largely increased
business, has led the management seriously
to consider whether the contract could not
bo simplified and certain conditions erpsed
therefrom which have- been the subject of
much criticism and misconception. '
After a careful examination of tho ex
perience of some of the best companies in
Great Britain, who bavo shown a greater
liberality than has been customary in this
country, this lociety feels justified in adopt
in" a form of contract in which the follow-
ing important concessions aro made to pol
icy holders throughout tho United States :
1. Policies will bo made incontestable
after three years from their date.
2. Each ordinary policy will provido for
a definate surrender-value in paid-up assur
ance, in case tho policy is forfeited after
three years from its date.
3. Each Tontine policy will contain a
definito surrender-value in cash, in case of
withdrawal at the end of the tontine
4. The contract will be concisely and
clearly expressed, containing only such
provisions as aro necessary to protect the
5. Thfl above concessions will hereafter
inure to tho benefit of all policies already
issued and in force, after three years from
their dates respectively.

A NARROW ESCAPE.
From Metropolis Times.
A party of yellow fever refugees' were
left on Dug Island just above Smithland
because the boat could not go round the
chute to Smithland where they desired to
stop. They undertook to cross the river in
skiffs and getting too near the dam the cur
rent carried them rapidly to the tall over
the dam. The water running over the dam
was nut deep enough to float the skiffs and
they were lodged on the rocks. The ed
dying current was whirling the skiffs round
at a rapid rate ami the women and children
were screaming with fear, when George
Hostetter and James Underwood ot this
ptace v ho happened to be near there on a
raft, took a skiff aud went to their rescue.
They managed to help the boat'over the dam
and rowed the party to shore in safety.
