Another important feature of the Anchor
line is the regular and speedy tnnsi: of
freights between the pcrts of New York and
St. Louis by their connections with the
Cromwell and the Morgan steamship lines.
Freights thut were formerly sent across the
country from New York by rail have been
turned southward, and are incieasingin im
portance and volume monthly. The fol
lowing is a list of the officers domiciled at
St. Louis, viz: John A. Scudder, presi
dent; J. P. Keis'r, superintendent; 9i. C.
Weirirk, secretary: John W. Carroll, gen
eral freight agent. Capt. J . B. Woods is
the general agent and superintendent in
this citv, and has his office at No. 104 Com
Captain Shield i9 the general agent at
Cairo for the Anchor line. Office, on the

as margin on 100 shares St. Paul H, R.
stock realized $1,000 for the operator a few

though thu market is quoted dull. There
is a surplus of nearly all grades offering
and prices arc unchanged.

TOBACCO Is not "booming" quite as
much as could be desired, but it is useless
to expect it to "boom" much more this sea
son as tho fact is potent that the crop is
nearly all in. The little that does arrive
sells at satisfactory prices, and a few buyers
left town express a determination to sec
the "season "through if it takes all summer.
