THE ORIGIN OF YELLOW FEVEIC.
It is a noticeublo fact that thorn
little difference of opinion among physic
iuus uu iiuve practiced mcuicino in yel
low fever districts, and have had the ad
vantage of long and careful observation, as
to the malanal origin of that twrriWo
scourge. Tho elder Dr. Stone, of New Or- '
leans, than whom no man had a larger ex
pciience, always maintained that yellow
fever was one of the malarial croun ot dis
eases, and differed from intermittent and
remittent only in the violence otthe attack.
Dr. Blair holds tho same opinion in his ad
mirable treatise. Watson in his "Institutes,"
and Condie in his "Notes on Watson's In
stitutes," make no question on the subject.
But one of the most suggestive illustrations
of this view occurs in Dr. Ferguson's cele
brated work on malarial diseases. It is a
general observation that in malarious tlis
tricts ague and repiittcnt fevers are more
common in hot and dry than in cold and"
humid seasons. Temperature appears tobo
the tactor which mainly determines thedif- .
ferences observed in tho malarial group of "
diseases at different elevation" and in dif
ferent seasons of tho year. In the more
elevated districts of the West Indies inter
mittcnts arc common; lower down with an
increase in tlie mean temperature, remittenb)
are the rule, and in the lowest and hottest
districts the fever is continued. In 181 6,
says Ferguson, tlie Brittisli garrison of En
glish Harbor, Antigua, was dis
posed in three 'separate barracks.
situated on fortified hills surrounding tho
dockyard. One of these barracks occupied
Monk's Hill, an cmiiience GOO lect above
the level of tho marshes. The other two
were situated upon the ridge at tho respec
tive elevations of 500 and 300 feet. 80
dangerous were the marshes below that it
often happened to a well-acclimated soldier,
coming down from Monk's Hill, and
mounting high-guard in perfect health, to
be taken with furious delirium while stand
ing sentry, and to die within thirty hours
nt'ter being carried to tho barracks. Tho
yellow skin ami. black vomit were almost
invariably among tho ' prominent
symptoms in these cases. Among
tho oflicicrs, women, and drummers on
Monk's Hill, who never descended to tho
marshes, there wa3 not a single case of le
ver during the whole slimmer. Sevcutcen
men were quartered iu the lower ridgo bar
racks, 30 J feet above the marshesbut were
not required to perform night duty at the
dock-yard. Every one of these men had re
mittent fever, but no case of black vomit
occurred among them. Thus, in the same
place, at tho same time, the malaria
in the level plain caused a con
tinued fever, identical in rapidity and
symptoms with yellow; at all elevations of
300 feet the type was remittent, and at 600
feet there were either light agues or no dis
ease at all. It is upon facts like these, ob
served by men in constant association with
the topography of malarious districts, that
; the decided opinion of such men as Stone,
Blair, Watson, Condie and Ferguson are
fouuded ; nad their views ought certainly to
take precedence of those of mcro germ the
orists in investigating the astiology of yel
low fever epidemics.
