HOW THE GYPSIES HONORED
London Truth, AHsiut 2S.
Hero is a sample of gypsy honesty.
Early in this century the queen of a tribe,
or heir-apparent to tho sovereignty I for
get winch ilietl. She was but a child,
aged fourteen, and her name was Paradise
Buckler. The tribo were then camped on
Bell Heath, in Worcestershire, and they
desired to bury her in tho churchyard of
Belbroughton, in which parish she clicu.
Being au uuniarried girl, the deceased was
to be carried by nothing out white pockct-
lamlkcrchiels ana the comn was to bo cov
ered with tho same. Every gypsy of the.
tribe also wnntcd a white pocket-handkerchief
for his own use on tho occasion. They
went round and "borrowed these commc
d ties, and the villagers nnd gentry gave
them up in much the same spirit as the
Esvptians did when tho Israelites "bor
rowed" of them, not liking to incur the en
mity of the tribe by retusal. But when the
ceremony was over each handkerchief waa
duly restored to its owner, bcautilully
washed nnd bleached. Iu one or two cases
where the borrowed nrticles had been
slightly injured they were replaced by
others of the finest cambric. To this day
some of the "oldest inhabitants" tell of tho
spectacle of that funeral of the gypsy child
queen and how the gypsies gathered by
hundreds from the country to attend tho
ceremony; and most of all, how astonished
the parishioners were at the honesty of tho
gypsies on the occasion. Besides the scru
pulous return of tho borrowed llankerchiefs,
there were no complaints of thefts during
the inroad of the tribe for the ceremony.
They seem to have felt themselves in the
light of guests nnd under obligations for the
loans made to them, and returned the com
pliment by a temporary regard for mcum
and tuum. The gypsies erected a handsome
square stone tomb over the remains of their
young queen, and they keep it in repair to
this day. I notico that somo correspond
ents in tho Standard stato that gypsies like
to obliterate the name and all traces of their
dead. They do not do so in the case of
Paradise Buckler. The inscription on her
tomb is clear to this day, though more than
half a century old. Gypsies, cn passant, of
ten visit it. It stands on the southeast side
ot the churchyard, nnd I havo myself often
read the inscription on it.
