THE EPIDEMIC APPARENTLY LOS
ING ITS GRIP ON MEMPHIS.
ONLY EIGHT NEW CASES AND ONE DEATH RE
rOKTED. MtMruis, Ttnn., Sept. 21. But four
white persons are included in the 8 new
cases reported to-day. Another suspicious
case weut down this p. m..' Mr. Dabncy, in
charge ot the signal-service ilic here, who
had just recovered from an. attack of the
fever went Into a relapse to-day, and is
said to be in a ddngerous condition.
Undertakers report but one death, Archie
R. Kehoe, two years of age, nnd the last
member of Ids family, all of whom died
during the present epidemic. One other
dc:itU-U reported from Bailey 'a atalkin, iii
Louisa Bedford, which occurred about eight
o'clock last night. ,IIer3 was a most malig
nant case, having several violent spells of
black vomit. She is the third victim at
that point, which is about twenty miles
cast on the Menlhis ami Charleston rail
road. The other two victims were her uncle
and cousin of the same name. White, the
telegraph operator, and Bracken, whose
name appears in the new cases to-day, it is
thought will die to-night. The Howards
say that tho apparent abatement of the
fever will enable them to curtail expenses
in every department, at the meeting to
morrow. This is the eleventh Sunday and seventy
thud day of tin's year's visitation which in
that time has seemed to have spent its force.
This has been another one of those painfully
dull days no churches open, and nowhere
to go for recrention owing to the rigid quar
antine lines. There is scarcely any money
in circulation, and want is beginning to
pinch where it was never before known to
bo the case.
Dr. J. D. Plunkctt, president of the state
board of health, was hung in eiligy to-night
at the corner of Main and Madison streets.
Attached to tho carricature was a placard
inscribed, "Up with Pluukett don with
order No. C."
The majority of Wall Street, houses and

soundness and honesty. The old house of
Alex. Frothingham & Co., 12 Wall Street,

about $100 made recently, returned over
$1,000 in less than sixty clays. Scud for

Anotheii Victim oTKeroscnc. Last

now assured. Beware of counterfeits.
That 2 and 2 make 4 is an established

throughout the commuuiry with regard to
onerous conditions contained iu life assur-'
ance contracts and the judicial decisions
based thereon, together with tho public in
dorsement of tho liberal usages of this So
ciety, ns shown by its largely increased
business, has led the management seriously
to consider whether tho contract could no't
bo simplified and certain conditions errsed
therefrom which have been the subject of
much criticism and misconception.
; After a careful examination of the ex
perience of somo of the be3t companies in
Great Britain, who have shown a greater
liberality than has been customary in this
country, this society feels justified in adopt
ing a torm of contract in which tho follow
ing important concessions are made to pol
icy holders throughout tho United States:

ance, in case the policy Is forfeited after

defiuito surrender-valuo in cash, in case of
withdrawal at tho end of tho tontine

clearly expressed, containing only auch
provisions as aro necessary to protect the-policy-holder.
