Memphis, Oct. 13. The returning ab
sentees are getting too numerous. An old
darky innocently but earnestly remarked

The increase in the number of new cases to
dayand that increase being chiefly of
people who recently returned to their homes
should be a warning to those yet absent
to remain away until officially notified of
the proper time to come lipme.
Twenty new cases are reported from all
sources, fifteen of whom are whites.
The Howards furnished twenty nurses to
day. Their receipts of contributions to
day aggregate $1,170, $1,000 of which
came from Boston.
At daylight to-morrow morning a force
of thirty-two men will be placed aa a gaurd
on the riverfroutto enforce the same quaran
tine rules as now govern rail and wagon

The dissatisfaction which prevails
throughout the community with regard to
onerous conditions contained in life assur
ance contracts and the judicial decisions
based thereon, together with the public in
dorsement of tho liberal usages of this So
ciety, as shown by its largely increased
business, has led the manngcnient seriously
to consider whether tho contract could not
bo simplified anil certain conditions er?scd
therefrom which have been tho subject of
much criticism and misconception.
After a careful examination of tho ex
perience of somo of the best companies in
Great Britain, who havo shown a greater
liberality than has been customary In this
country, this society feels justified in adopt
ing a form of contraot in which the follow
ing important concessions are made to pol
icy holders throughout the United States:
1. Policies will be made incontestable
after three years from their date.'
3. Each ordinary policy will provide for
a deflnato surrender-value in paid-up assur
ance, In case the policy is forfeited after
three years from its date.
8. Each Tontino nolicv wilr contain a
definite surrender-value In cash, in case of
