THE MURDERED MEEKER.
Tho Anna Fruit Grower, of Thursday
says:
Nathan C. Meeker, the government agent
at the White River Agency, who, with his
wife and daughter, and about twenty other
whites were mercilessly murdered by the
treacherous Ute Indians, formerly resided
enst of Dongola, in this couuty. Ho was a
man of more than onlinury ability und the
valued correspondent of various first-class
publications. He was tho first mun to raise
strawlierrics for market in this now cele
brated fruit region. A correspondent of
the Jonesboro Gazette, in last week's is
sue thus speaks of Mr. Meeker.
"While Mr. Meeker was a citi
zen of this county, he experimented in the
cultivation of fruits and vegetables, lie
was tlic lirst man in the county who raised
strawberries for shipment. His neighbors
called him crazy and penurious because he
did not invite them all in to spend Sunday
in his strawberry patch. His des
cription of Southern Illinois to the
N. V. Tribune was not very flattering at
times, but Ids quaint stylo of describing
things ninth' it pardonable. He was a tar
seeing, intelligent, honest man, and as a war
correspondent, had few equals. The writer
met fiim frequently while in the army.
Whenever we wished to get a reliable uud
comprehensive view of the situation we al
ways made it a point to hunt up Mr.
Meeker."

closest analysis reveals nothing in tho com
position of a deleterious nature. It does
not deteriorate, is an agreeable cordial as
well as a potent mediciuo, and when mixed
with brackish or unwholesome water neu
tralises its hurtful properties. Tho deni
zens of malarial localities, not only in tho
United States, but in tho tropics, regard it
as an invaluable protection, and in hosts of
families it is kept constantly on hand. As
tho title of emigration spreads farther west
ward, tho demand for it among thoso com
pelled to encounter tho vicissitudes of cli
mate, constantly increase.
