Memphis, Oct. 19. But two new cases
and one death, nil whites, were reported to
the board of health to-day, while at tho
Howard oflice are repoited one white and
three colored, new cases.
From Forrest City nothing has been
heard at office of the Howards, and they
are encournged by these facts to the belief
that tho trouble is about ended over there,

perature all day, and to-night a thick veil
of clouds has been driven up by the cold
northern blasts until now a snow storm is
threatened. Dr. Thornton of the board of
health says ho will, at tho earliest safe mo
ment, issuo his proclamation when it wil
be proper for the refugees to return.

service to-day were pretty well filled. Over

The New York papers notice an impor
tant rise in the value of Illinois' Central
railroad stock. The advance during the
past five weeks lias been from 89 to 00.
The Imlieutor predicts that this stock will
go to par during the fall, and gives as its
reason for this belief that it is among tho
best dividend paying stocks; that the prop,
erty is rapidly increasing in value, and that
while other railroad stock had been made
objects of speculation, aud thus moved into
activity, no artificial influence of this na
ture has been exercised in tho caso ot Illi
nois Central. It is also stated that Euro
pean purchasers aro seeking it ns tin invest
ment. Tho Indicator adds: "Europeans
have unbounded confidence in tho security;
tho earnings of the road are Btcadily in
creasing; It is now n 0 per cent, dividend
stock, and is expected to pay 8 per cent,
next year, and tho property is unembar
