SERMAN VS. GRANT.
Washington Correspondence Hartford Time.
Tolin Sherman makes no concealment,
when talking with his intimate friends, of
his disgust over the attention that is paid
to Grant siuco his return to this country.
Some of Sherman's prominent adherents
are not us fearful of the consequences as
Sherman is himself. They say Grant can
"do disposed of, if by auy means' he can be
put back in the army on the retired list for
litis that such a provision is all that Grant
desires, and that they are certain he would
accept it if it can be secured.. If it cannot
be done, they admit that Graut is in Sher
man's wav, and will be a troublesome factor
in tho next Republican presidential conven
tion. In the meantime Sherman will run
the country, as far as he can, iu the inter
ests ot his own boom, as against the move
ment set on foot and so admirably worked
up by Grant and his friends. If Sherman's
money ideas are the right ones he is sure to
win, as he does not allow Hayes or any
member of the cabuict to interfere with
him in the running en" tho treasury depart
ment. THE EQl'ITABLE LIFE ASSURANCE

M EXT TO THE PUBLIC:
The dissatisfaction which prevails
throughout the community with regard to
onerous conditions contained in life assur
ance contracts ami the judicial decisions
based thercou, together with the public in
dorsement of the' liberal usages of this So
eii'ty, us shown by its largely increased
business, hits led the management seriously
to consider whether the contract could not
be simplified and certain conditions erf sed
therefrom which have beeu the subject of
much criticism and misconception.
After a careful examination of tho ex
perience of some of the best companies in
Great Britain, who have shown a greater
liberality than has been customary in this
countrv, this society fools justified iu adopt
ing a form of contract In which the follow
lug important concessions are made to pol

"l. Policies will bo made incontestable
after three years from their date.
2. Each" ordinary policy will provide for
a dellnate suriender-value iu paid-up assur
ance, In caso tho policy is forfeited after
three years from its dato.
8.. Each Tontine policy will contain a
definite surrender-value in cash, in case of
withdrawal at , tho end of the tontlno
period. . . ;
4. The contract will ba concisely and
clearly expressed, containing only such
provisions aa are necessary to protect tlio
5. Thn alwvo concessions will hereafter
