THE RELEASED PRISONERS
Dexveh, Oct. 30. Mrs. and Miss Meek
er and Mrs. Price and two children, late
captives among the Utes, arrived at Denver
to night. Mrs. Meeker is very feeble aud
ill. A special dispatch to the Tribune
states that Gen. Edward Hatch, Gen. Chas.
Adams, special agent, and Chief Ouray have
been appointed commissioners, to investi
gate the Ute Outbreak.
SANITARY CONDITION OK TUE CITV TO BE
Mkmi-iiis, Oct. 30. The national board
of health will, during the month of No
vember, begin a sanitary survey of the city,
which work will be supervised by Col
Waring and Mat. W. II. If. Bertjaud. As
soon as the absentees have all returned a
house ' to house inspection will be
made under the auspices of the
national board, with a view of ascertain
ing the necessities for proper sanitary im
provement. This work will be completed
about the 25th of November aid submitted
to Dr. J. S. Billings, vice-prcsideut; Drs.
Johnson and Mitchell, members of the na
tional btjard, and Dr. Folsom of Boston,
who will visit the city at the period named.
A test of Wolt river and cistern water will
be made by Dr. Smith, surgeon of the U. S.
army. The survey of the city will be
made in compliance with the request of the
taxing district government.
Two fcycr cases were reported to the
board ' of health this afternoon Alfred
Goldschmidt aud John Linkhaur. Both
have been active workers all during the
past epidemic. The weather remains very

NEW YORK DEPARTMENT CLERKS GOING
HOME TO VOTE. '
Washington, Oct. 30. All of the depart
ments, except the interior, have given the
New York clerks leave to go homo to vote
without having their pay stopped. Secre
tary Schurz of the interior says his clerks
can go home to vote, but tliat the time so
used must be taken out of the tltirty Jays
allowed each year for it vacation on pay.
This is the course pursued by Secretary
Schurz when other state elections have oc
curred, yet the friends of Senator Conkling
say the decision- is made as regards New
York out of a spiteful feeling against the
THIRTEEN PERSONS KILLED BY APACHES IN
Tucson, Ara., Oct. 30. Intelligence was
received this morning that the Apaches had
cupturcd a station on the Jornado del
Micsto, near Fort Craig, and killed thirtocn
persons. Tho Navajoes have broken out
also, and the troops at Fort Wingatc have
l)cen dispatched against them. They stolo
all tho stock, including the mail mules.
