teamster, while intoxicated, shot and fatally
wounded Clias. Chapman of Los Angeles,
California. Murray then reloaded his car

manded ly miners. The price now paid at
the mines near this city is 3 cents per ton
and the miners ask fur $1. A meeting of
coal operators was held n tins city and a

operators and miners held a consultation
meeting, but a compromise or settlement of
differences was nut secured. The miners
are determined to In force- their demand,
and a general strike is threatened. The

Ohio, special to the Gazette says the miners
in that region to-day held a meeting and
determined to demand au advance of 23

IJanoou, Me., November 0. The murder
of James J. Norrls at Bradley on Friday
niglit caused great excitement in this
iciuity. Seventy-three dollars wero found
on his person, and a slip cut from a news

tim's son, Charles Norris, now residing in

took tho keys, went to his office, opened tho
safe, secured about $1,000 and made his
escape. Three hundred and seventy-one
dollars ot this money belonged to Cutter &
Eddy, proprietors of the mill where Norris
was foreman. Tho balance to tho town of
Bradley; Mr. Norris being collector and
treasurer. A Frenchman named Joseph
Boulcau, who had been discharged from
the mill on Thursday, was arrested on
Sunday morning on suspicion, and suffi
cient evidence found on his person to con
vict him. Tho axe with which tho murder
was committed was found in the mill pond
this atternoon, blood-stains still on it, and
it lias been identified ns one stolen from
the mill last Wednesday. The victim was
sixty years old and highly respected.
He has five sons, all b'ving in the West.
SCTrjSED INCENDIARY ARRESTED.
Wiieelino, W. Va., November 9. On
Friday evening last Thos. Cneck was ar
rested at his home in Jacktown, Pensyl
vania, for seti'ng fire to Bethany college,
in Brooke county, this state, somo weeks
ago, which caused the partial destruction
of that edifice, Tho arrest was made by
Deputy Sheriff Curds, and the prisoner wa3
brough to Bethany Saturday morning.
The people turned out in great numbers,
and were in such a state of mind ' that the
Sheriff was afraid the people wouhi take
tho law iito their own hands and sum
marily end Cheek's fate by lynching. The
Sheriff accordingly removed Cheek to this
city, lodging him in the covnty jail last
evening to await his preliminary hearing.
SAD EFFECT OF SUDDEN JOY.
A telegraph clerk's wife had for somo
time been in failing health. She went, by
advice of physicians, to spend the summer
in a farm-house, in llormandy, where board
ers were taken. She wrote to her husband
almost daily, and gave favorable bulletins
of her health. Recently he received a let
ter bearing the postmark of the villago
where she was staying. It announced the
wife's death. Tho poor husband swooned
away, fell into (in armchair and was com
pletely stunned by the blow. This stupe
faction lasted three or four hours. Ho
was aroused from it ly lils door-bell. Ho
opened the door. Ilisr wife, the very pic
ture of health, stood before him. His sur
prise aud joy wero too sudden too great.
lie muttered incoherent phrases, hysteric
ally laughed and sobbed alternately. Ho
was insane. His physicians fear his death
will speedily follow.
