WATER FAMINE IS VIRGINIA.
Petersjicik;, Va., November 10. The
drought which has prevailed to such an
alarming extent in this section ol the state
during the past three months, is causing
great anxiety and uneasiness. Wells and
streams are drying up, ami iu some adja
cent counties the people are compelled to
travel miles in vehicles in search of water
for family use. Iu several churches here
to-day prayers were offered for rain.

from Syracuse to the Herald says: "Efforts

to harmonize the conflicting elements of
the Democratic party of this state, having
the endorsement of Senator Kerntin, Judge
Comstoek, Judge Pratt, Editor Purcell and
ex-Senator Raines, who have held a con
ference upon the subject. A conference of

take action in regard to the matter is to
be called at Utiea. Ex-Governor Seymour

Boston, November 10. Memorial ser
vices in honor of the late General Hooker
took place at. Muaic hall to-duy iu the pres
ence of an imposing military and civic as
semblage. Upon thu platform, which was
tastefully draped with flags and arches
bearing the insignia of mourning, were
seated Governor Talbot, Lieutenant Gover
nor Long, Ex-Govctnors Rice and Gaston,
General A. II. Mastin, Mayor Priuco and
other prominent gentlemen. The floor was
occupied solely by grand army posts and
veterans, Including squads representing
Massachusetts and New Hampshire- regi
ments, which composed tho first brlgado
which General Hooker commanded. There
was very full representation from grand
army posts of this and adjoining states.
