Tlic Grant 'boom'' is proving a lively
i.e, but it will not last long enough to
"boom' the General into the Presidency in
180.
Mr. William 1).Tukheii, one of the
publishers of the Democrat, Little llock,
Ark., died recently, aged 38 years, lie was
for several years connected with the Gazette,
of the same city, and was a Brigadier-Genual
in the Confederate army.
TiiKKB is every indication, as claimed by
the Republican papers of the north, of the
breaking up of tbjj Democratic party in the
wmth, particularly in Mississippi. Iu that
state at the recent election, the Democrats
fleeted only four-filths of the legislators and
ihree-fourths of the 'state senators. It is
about goue.
Tiik St. Louis Times says : "The prom
inent Irish citizens of Boston have held a
meeting and resolved to give Thomas
Powell, JL P., a generous reception on the
occasion of his visit to that city. As the
uotod agitator will also come to St. Louis
similar arrangements will, doubtless, be
laade by our Irish citizens. For instance,
ihe Knights, of St. Patrick might tender
him a banquet and give him an eloquent
welcome speech.
The St. Louis Times lets the air out of the
Grant wit bubble iu this manner: "Grant
i:Kh always been like the traditional Scotch
man whose head had to be bored before a
joke could be" gotten into it. Like his two
great cxainplcrs, C;csar and Napoleon, ho
ias heretofore seemed to be entirely devoid
-f the sense of humor, but several shallow
I'ated Republican editors are now con
duced that in addition to all his other
greatness Grant has the qualities of a firet--hss
wit. This comes because Grant in
'lis Chicago speech, referring to the array,
Kaid: 'What little army we have is no
Kaudingarmy, for it has no time to stand.'
This might be very funny if General Scott
bad not said the same thing about forty
years ago.
MAINE AND LOUISIANA.
Speaking ot the alleged sharp practice uf
the governor and council of Maine, the New
York Tribune says : "Why, they are acting
just like the Louisiana returning board."
We imagine these down-cast dignitaries
will repudiate the comparison as a gratui
tous insult ; but let us suppose, fur argument
Kike, that the Tribune is right, ami that
Maiue is copying on a smull scale the ex
ample of Louisiana what then? Tho Trib
une, and every other Republican organ, in
sists that Wells, Anderson, Casanavc and
Kenner are entitled to the thanks of their
party for having bravely discharged a sol
nun and imperative duty; and that the
lection of u president of the United State
by two negroes and two white men was a
jiairl'jtic performance which saved the
country. Can we, then, have "too much of
ii good thing?" And if a thing is good in
Louisiana how comes it to be so bad in
Maine? Surely tho mere fact that in the
former it was the Democrats who were hurt,
w hile in the latter Republican may suffer,
w ill not bias tho judgment of "the party of
j.;rea moral idens." Intad of abusing tho
governor and council for humbly imitating
the centennial fraud, consistency demands
for thorn the heartiest Republican applause
Republican.
