Cincinnati. Nov. 20. D. A. Portertield,
who recently discovered lead and silver ore
on a farm near Cynthiana, Ky., lias sunk a
shaft and taken out specimens at a depth
of twenty-five feet, which have been as
sayed by E, Swayne of this city, who finds
in them 890 pounds of lead to the ton, and
1S,3j ounces of silver.

C'iDAR Rapids, Io., Nov. 20. The town

Cedar Rapids and Postville, burned yester

The other night about 10 o'clock a con
stablo, was walking up Maplo stroet on
business, was halted by a weak-looking
littlo man who was.a bit agitated. The offi
cer suspected a family row, but it didn't
turn out that way. Tho little man asked
him to step around the corner and take a
look nt a certain house, and the officer
stepped. It was an unoccupied house, and
as they halted before it tho citizen said:
"It is my humble opinion that there w
no family m here, and that a water-pipe
has bursted. I dislike very much to see
any one's property damaged if I can pre
vent it."
Sure enough, there was two feet of water
in the cellar and more rushing in.
"It is my humble opinion," remarked the
little man as tho two looked through tho
cellar window, "that some thief has cut off
tho pipe and the drain la stopped up. Per
haps you don't want to see this property

The constable didn't. In his philan
thropy he decided to open the drain, and

From my hotel window I can look out
almost any clear day and sec a dim column
of smoke In the far southwest. I have
asked the cause of it and have been told
that it is the vapor from a boiling spring,
which has never been found, owing to the
impenetrable nature of the swamps in which
it Is situated. My informants say it fro
micntly deceived blockade-runners during
the war. The runners would suppose it a
signal from shore nnd run in to certain
capture. I suggested one day that perhaps
there might be Borne illicit whisky distilla
tion going on iu that swamp. The possi
bility, and even probability, was admitted.
"Then none of you, I presume," I asked,
"saw that column of smoke before or during
the war?" None had seen it until the tax
on whisky was levied, for, they said, hcy
had never had their attention called to it
until of late years.
I accosted a gray-haired negro on tbe
subject of the smoky column: "Well,
sah," said he, "if you was down in do
noigborhood of whar dut smoke is, and
you should lecve a jug alongside de road
wid a quarter tied to de handle, you'd bo
mighty ap' to find dat jug filled wid whisky

"Dat would bo gone, sah."
