ANOTHER BROKEN DANK.
Lot i.-svn.LE, Ky., Jan. 14. At a late hour
to-night the following notice was; sont to the
city papers. Its contents are till that is
known of the affair :
Savings Bans ok Louisville, f
Jan. 14, lstfO. '
At a meeting oi directors and istock
holders of the Having bank Louisville this
day to overhaul and examine the condition
of the bank, there was found to be so lame
a deficit in accounts of the cashier, J. H.
IUiorer, that it was determined to close the
bank aud wind up its affairs. In the sav
ings department, which was under the man
agement of Joshua F. Speed. Jr., ami John
J. Caperton, all was found right. Persons
baring private boxes in the vault will con
tinue to have access to them as usual, the
keys beiug in the hands of Jus. W. llcu
ning, vice-president, aud Joshua F. Speed,
Jr.. assistant cashier.
It is learned that the amount of the do
ticit is $fi7,000. Uhorer. a man seventy
years of age, is a stockholder in the bank
aud 1 as held the position of cashier for
years. Depositor? will not suffer loss as the
bank promises to make the deficit gixid.
The defalcation was discovered late this
evening by a committee of the board of di
rectors who were examining the books. A
member said to Cashier Rlmrcr, "Now we,
will examiuc your accounts." Rliorer took
up a pen and wrote: "Deficit, $67,000."
and left the bank. He was caught on the
way to jail, where he proposed going to
give himself up.
DECLINES TO INTERFERE.
Jefkekson Citv. Jan. 14. The governor
has declined at procnt to commute the
sentence of Win. Wykers of Latayette
county from llfteeu years to ten years.
Wykers was sentenced in 1S75 for seven
years ou cue indictment, five years on an
ether and three years ou a third, till for
horse Scaling. Ou the iirst two indict
ments ho was tried and convicted, and to
the third he pleaded guilty. A commuta
tion cf the sentence was recommended by
the inspectors, on the ground of excessive
punishment. The governor thinks it too
soon to apply tor a commutation; that when
he has served nearly ten years it will be
time enough to cousider the matter.

A Thankful Ditcher. A prominent
butcher of Port Carbon, Pa., reports: I can
not refrain from informing you of the won
derful effects of St. Jacobs Oil. I suffered,
many years with Rheumatism, and to sueh
a degree that I was often unable to leave
my lied. I used St. Jacobs Oil and was re

peared, and to-day I feel like new-born.

Another Savings Bank gone up! This
has been said so often of late, that people
are beginning to look for safer investments
for their surplus cash. Any man who has

STARTLING MORAL DECADENCE.

What Frank Les-lik'n III. Newmmpkh
says: A good piano at a lair price is one.
of the wants of the times. An instrument
that is durable, that is substantially made,
nun una mi i nose qualities ol tone which
make a tlist class piano, can bo had from
the Mendelssohn Piano Co., 21 East Fif
teenth street, New York, from $140 to 1 100.
For over thirty-seven years tlieir factory
has been producing pianos, and adoptiug
every new invention which lias proved itself
to be valuable. They can bo compared by
an expert with the instruments of the high
est uamo and fancy price, and the result i
surprisingly satisfactory. Tho Piano is
warranted for five years, and uo purchaser
has ever tnado a complaint. From personal
knowledge and critical examination we can
rocommond any ono to lend for a catalogno
to the above mentioned manufacturers.
