We lje;;ve c have Men a aridida!" in

lutuie. lie i.as repeatedly refused to
be considered it candidate for

authority for saying he would in any i vi nt

crat, and if then; should appear to be a
popular demand for his services as our can
didate next fall, we fed corif.derit he is too
patriotic to refuse to allow t i if use- of his
' Mr. llalliday in a younc man, but lias
had larire experience in pubiie ulfiirs. 1 It
has been a member and chairman of our
county board. To be a membt r of the
county board of Alexnder county implies
no particular ability; but to pilot the coun
ty from insolvency to Crst-Ciass credit,
without any increase of taxation, as Mr.
llalliday has done, ives evidence of exec
utivc capacity far above that possessed by
tbe average member of congress. As a
member cf our city council he deuionptrated
l.:s remark tble fitness for posi
tions of the highest trust. No man
will be found to deny that the successful
management of the finance of the City of
Cairo, the just and eipiitable eomprombc
and reduction of the funded debt of the
city, uml the change of our financial bur
then which was unbearable and ruinous, to
a funded debt which we can carry, and
whilej carrying it, still have strength to
improve and ndurn our city we siy, no
man will be found to deny that these finan
cial triumphs are due to the financial acit
men, adroitness, and industry of Tom
And when Mr. llalliday, without v
position in his party was selected as the lit
man to represent Alexander county in the
legislature, lie went into that body com
paratively a stranger, and one of its young
est members. Dut he did not long remain
a stranger. In legislative bodies the cali
bre of each mem her is very soon taken by
his brother member, and in a short time it
was found out that, as a legislator, Mr
llalliday carried a long range gun, and by
common consent he went to the front, and
mantaincd his position there during the en
tire ses.joii. His familiar knowledge of
state, county, and city taxation, and of
the general subject of revenue,
was so far above that of the
average member of the legislature,
that it was the almost unanimous
voice of his party friends in the legislature
that he ought to be tiie nut Democratic
candidate for state auditor. But there
would be some doubt about the election of
a Democratic candidate for state auditor;
and we believe there would be no doubt
about the election of Mr. llalliday if he
should be placed in the field as our candi
date for congress. His character as a cor
rect business man of solid attainments and
as a successful legislator would place him.
with his popular manners and modest de
meanor, in favorable contrast with Mr.
Thomas and his gaudy plumage and poeti
cal effusions. We believe Mr. llalliday, in
addition to the good qualities mentioned,
can "'rally the boys," better than anybody
we can nominate, and we therefore name
him as our choice.

may be avoided, and for this purpose we
know of no better remedy than "Dr.

sure to cure the worst cold or cough iu a
very short time. Try a 2i cent bottle and
be convinced, and you will thus ivoid a
doctor's bill, and most likely a serious spoil
of sickness. Price 23 cents and 1 1 per bot

most economical. Prepared by Dr. Swayne

The work of the Democratic party in
this year of TWO is now plainly revealed.
The indications, lor a time not so emphatic,
again point surely to the nomination of
General Grant. His success means a re
turn of the alarming corruptions which so
ncavlv paralv.ed the moral power of the
country ; the accelerated growth of mon-'
opoly and the tightening of the loldsol the
anacondu-like money power: the rule of
rings and the final establishment
of personal government in the
United States. If there is virtue enough
in the American people and cap.icity
enough to maintain popular institutions in
their essence and usefulness, the autocratic
power of the ( 'amorous, Conklings and
money kinos of the east will be sueecs-fully
resisied and defeated. Whatever hope- tin
country has in this respect is in the D.-nio.
cratic party. There is and can be no other
organized opposition to a third term of
Genera! Giant and its attendant evils and
dangers, except such as will bo made by
the Democratic party.

Clir'AGo HOTEL KEEPERS,
i ilnlir Dtitiui rut.
Tin-Chicle"! hotel keepers have devised
a line scheme for fleering the delegates mid
v'fMtorsto the N.itional Republican conven
tion, They estimate the number of cots
that can be crowded into a room and will
charge t" dollar per day for each cot its
long as the convention htsls, If anybody
objects to tit- i.itiliiit' plan of sleeping, he
can pay the full rental for his room accord
ing to the rot scheme and sleep alone and
in peace. If his room is so small that only
three tuts can be crowded into it, he
will only be retpiiretl to pay $n per 1 1 ay:
if he is ho corpulent as to require a ten cot
room, his bill wo (fifl per day. When the
Chicago delegation went to Washington a
few weeks ago to induce tbe Republican
National committee to call the convention
at Chicago ihey made the most solemn
pledge that ho'tel rates khwuld not be rats-
en the visitors. Evidently the delegation
lied. Tlio Democrats would do well to bear
this fact in mind iu selecting the place for
their next convention.
