uui ucaiiu anu proupcnty, he continues
thus: "Y ho, unacquainted with its native
tendencies to eril, to look at it now, could
believe in the possibilities with which it is
endowed as a demon of devastation. Noth
ing clean in all animal hfo can exist in it
when once the warm spring sun pours down
on it and warms it up to that tempcraturo
when the unhappy boy who slips into it is
not in danger of being chilled to death be
fore bo can bo comfortably drowned.
Acres of vcgetablo life springs into exist
ence, beguiled by its mild tempe-aturo and
pellucid body, only to be converted at last
into a furthtr element of foul nastincss.
that seems to be tho one essential means of
the great end of this our curse, namely. to
destroy or pollute everything with which
it can possibly come iuto contact. "Our
great water privileges" sounds well to
strangers; but the real facts are that tho
water has many more '"privilege" than have
we. It intrudes itself iuto our cornfields;
inundates whole gardens of our early
vegetables; rises about the roots of our
fruit trees and drains tho life out of
them; finds its way into our cellars
and dampens the halls of our
houses; it filters its way into our
cisterns and poisons tho water therein ;stcals
up, at times, into our door yards, and rots
the roots of our most cherished aud best
loved plants and flowers. Hut worst and
meanest and most unpardonable of all, it
often stinks! Stinks to tho heavens!
Basely it bask3 in tho burning sun until
sucn time as its royal
have vented their
our '"bolsters" of sand, leaving their unwel
come child still sweltering in its prison
house, and from which prison house our
city fathers are only too willing to release
it. Long ere this, uncounted millions of
loathsome, creeping, hopping and swim
ming things have bred and lived and died
in its unclean depths. Much of the filth of
the whole population of the city has found
its way iuto it, and been more or less assim
ilated by it, and deposited to a depth of
many inches in and with the loamy soil
over which it rests. The waters of tho
Dead Sea are not so curned,
for they destroy only that which they en
fold. Shall we ever be able to lay the
sword across its deud body and say "thou
art vanquished thy day is ended thy
work is done, thou curse of Cairo?"
(The ''accumulation" being merely sipo-
watcr, we reply "yes, it can be vanquished."
Were it chiefly iain water, as a few are dis
posed to iusist, we should regard it a

to children. Tvvcnty-tive cents a box.
A down town merchant having passed
several sleepless nights, disturbed by the
agonies and cries of a suffering child, and
becoming convinced that Mrs. Wiuslow's
Soothing Syrup was jimt tho article needed,
procured a supply for tho child. On reach
ing home and acquainting his wife with
what he had done, she refused to have it
administered to tho child, as she was
strongly in favor of Homoeopathy. That
night the child passed in suffering, and the
parents without sleep, turning home
the day following, the futher found tho
baby still worse, and while contemplating
another sleepless night, the mother stepped
irom the room to attend to somo domestic
duties, and left tho father with tho child.
During her absence ho administered a por
tion of tho Soothing Syrup to the baby,
and said nothing. That night all handu
slept well, and the little lellow awoko in
tho morning bright and happy. The
mother was delighted with the sudden ami
wonderful change, and although at first of
