EXAMINATION IN THE THIR
TEENTH STREET SCHOOL.
The examinations in the different rooms
of the Thirteenth street school, passed off
in a very satisfactory manner, and were
That of the grammar room commenced
Monday p. in., arui-outiuued until Tuesday
night. Miss K. A. Thompson ami Miss
McKce are well known as among our best
teachers, and we feel sure of their success
in all that they undertake. The examina
tions of the A class in arithmetic, conduc
ted by Miss McKee, was especially rigid
and thorough, occupying over two hours.
This same class was also

and I may say, enthusiasm, which retle
great credit on their 'eaclier, Miss Mcl
l liere were only a few rhetorical ext
cises, most of the time being given to prac

pied the last hour of Tuesday afternoon,
and all were excellent that of Master Lee
Stratton being very tine, indeed. The read
ing of a selection from Mark Twain, by
Miss Wintic Dunning, gave evidence that
the young reader has a gilt in that direc
tion. The examination in room No. 1, Miss
Ella Thompson, teacher, Monday morning
and Miss Nisbet's school Monday afternoon,
were pleasing and showed faithfulness on
the part of the teachers. Miss Ilussel's
room was examined Monday afternoon.
Miss Russell came to us a stranger this
year, but her manner in the school room
shows that she is no stranger there; and
the recitations of her classes prove that she
is an experienced, earnest and
enthusiastic teacher. And she has
the faculty, too, of imparting
some of her enthusiasm to her pupils as
was plainly evidenced by their recitations,
particularly by their reading a branch of
study which is too often neglected in young
The examination in Miss Mollie Riley's
room was largely attended and was very
interesting. Miss Riley is not only popular
among the young people of our city, but
she is much beloved by her pupils.and their
progress in their studies shows appreciation
of efforts in their behalt. Miss Riley had
offered prizes at the beginning of the year
to the one who should have the most "head
marks"' in the A and B classes. Although
prizes nay be objectionable for the most
part, still one given in this way does not
seem so, for this did not call for the best
scholarship alone, but for faithfulness,
which should always be encouraged. Mas
ter Jack Alden and Jthn Fisher
heared the honors in the A class,
having an equal number of "head-marks, '
and Miss Clara Hendricks received the
prize in tte B class.
Room No. 4, Miss Risky, teacher, was
examined Tuesday p.m. Mis Risky has
not taucht in Cairo until this vear, coming
here a stranger at the same time as Miss
Russell. No. 4 has been a particularly un
fortunate room, for while we have had some
f ne teachers in charge of it, it has changed
hands soo often for any teacher to be very
successful averaging two different teach
ers every year, and thereby, of course, th
children becoming very much demoralized.
Miss Risky has proven herself mistress of
the situation, however, as pood order and
prompt recitation ot the scholars show
Like Miss Russell, she is an experienced,
earnest, faithful and thorough teacher, and
,the school board will do well to show their
appreciation of these teachers bv an earlv
