Antony the industrial establishnn.nts
of the city, that ojiciate quietly and unos
tentntiouHly, yet aro continuously prosper
iius, the ftcaiii "iu?ai.'e fitct'ory of Messrs.
Fred Koohler & I'.ro., is entitled to consj.ic
tmus mention. We visited their establish
ment yesterday, and found it under tull
headway in all its departments. It is sup
plied with tin: latest and most generally ap
proved machinery, and seems to be lacking
in notljinr that is eswntial to a completer
sauaagc factory. Its capacity U far beyond
the present demands of the market, as the
reader will understand when we remark
that one hundrer pounds ot meat thrown
under the knives are made into sausage
in the short space of six min
utes. With their present facilities
Messrs. K. & I5ro., can upply at least ten
thousand pounds of sausage daily; and the
steam power at their command is erjual to
the production of three or four times that
quantity. Everything alout the factor- is
kept scrupulously clean, and Mr. Fred K. is
prepared to give a priie beef for every
ounce of tainted or unsound meat that goes
under the knives of the sausage machine.
His reputation as a manufacturer stands
unimpeached, his sausages of every kind
are recognized as among the best manufac
tured in the northwest, and he cannot af
ford to imperil his own reputation
or that of his goods, by
the use of anything but the
best material that can be obtained. Fur
thermore, Messrs. K. & Bro. have just re
covered from the effects ot their late disas
ter by fire; have erected, and occupy a
substantial brick buildrng, especially ar
ranged for their business, and expect to
serve the trade here:.fter, more promptly
and satisfactorily than ever before. It is
their desire and purpose, therefore, to in
crease their trade, and with that view they
invite orders trotn all points in the country
promising to all their patrons the eom-
plctest satisfaction, alike in the quality of
the goods, the prices at which they will be
furnished, and in the promptness and in
tegrity that shall characterize all the firm's
business transactions. Address, Fred.
Koehler & liro., Cairo, Illinois.
-It would relief t upon the enterprise
and liberality of our people, should the
uggi-stion that a tair association be formed
in Cairo, fail to excite action. Alexander
and Pulaski form two of the five counties in
Illinois that have no fair associations,
whereas, singly or united, they might en
gineer the most successful exhibitions of
that kind given in Southern Illinois. With
our ready and cheap means of communica
tion with all the surrounding country; with
stock, with orchard and agricultural pro
ducts equ il to the best raised in any por
tion of the country, with intimate
business and social relations with the
people of the most prosperous
and promising portions of three great states
it would betray extreme niggardliness on
the part of our people, or woful misman
agement on the part of those in charge,
should even the first exhibition of a fair
association in this county, fail of complete
success, rinancially and otherwise. Five
thousand dollars, it is said, will put
grounds in readiness and pay all the pre
liminary expenses, for the first fair. It is
further stated that all future fairs
would not only provide for their
own cost, but prove a source of
profit to tho stockholders. But let theso
conjectures prove well or illy grounded,
if $5,000 will put a fair associa
tion on its feet in Alexander county, our
merchants and business men will fail in
the discharge of a duty they owe to them
selves and to the Cairo public, should they
lail to subscribe tho required amount at
once. The hundred dollars that any mer
chant or hotel-keeper might subscribe to
such an enterprise, would be thribly re
turned during the progress of any single
fair that would bring two thousand visitors
to our city from tho surrounding neighbor
hoods. But wo have neither time nor
space to pursue tho subject at this writing.
Let Messrs. Lancaster, Sprout,
Thistlowood, Williiims, Smyth, Fitz
gerald and other citizens who have
manifested a becoming interest in the proj
ect, set tho ball in motion. If it doesn't
roll, or fails to gather tho necessary green
back moss in its progress, wo shall not
besitato to make public tho causes that may
qcrato as a bindcrance.
