"THE ORIGIN OF TONTINES "AND BY
WHOM INTRODUCED INTO LIFE
Tontine annuities which were first made
attractive by Lorenzo Tonti, about the mid
dle of the seventh century, have become
exceedingly popular throughout Europe,
and in some parts of South America. A
Tontine is quite the reverse of life assur
ance; as it consists of a combination of
persons who contribute to a common Vund
which shall be enjoyed by the survivors
only; so that as years roll on and the mem
bers surviving diminish; the income is, of
course, constantly increasing to those who
live; until the last members of a class en
joy most extraordinary advantages from the
system. In 16S9 the lust survivor of the
Tontine in France, a widow, just before her
death, enjoyed an income equivalent to
about $00.001.1, of our money for her orig
inal subscription of about !S0. So
popular has this system been in
Europofthat uovernments have used it for
the purpose of raising money for national
support. The system now in practice by
the Equitable Li fit Assurance Society,
though different from either Tontine or
Life Assurance, combines the advantages
ot both, and was brought out under the
supervision of two well known mathema
ticians, Mr. George V. Phillips, actuary
Equitable Life Assurance Society of the
United States and Mr. Sheppard Unmans,
author of the contribution plan of divi
ders. The system is known us the "Tontine
Savings Fund Plan"' and at the time of jts
introduction into hfo assurance- by the
Equitable Life Assurance Society of the
United States, was strongly endorsed by
many leading mathematicians in tiji
country and Europe. William Barnes, then
superintendent of the insurance deparmerit
of the state ot New York, wrote to Mr.
Geo. W. riiillips under dato of February
2nd, 1809, as follows:
"Tho scheme (the Tontine dividend sys
tem) seems to be so natural and applicable
to certain classes of policy holders, that,
like many important discoveries in science
and art, the wonder i how it could have so
long remained dormant and undiscovered.
Especial credit is due to tho man, or men,
who conceived the thought of collecting
tho Tontine tendencies of men and apply
ing this momentum to the development and
spreading of life assurance. ' Your
plan, as developed in tho pamphlet, con
tains within Itself the clcmcpts tor the most
successful application of the principal of
any yet elaborated on either side of tho
Your new method of dividends, will, I
think, prove to be popular with our people,
as, while preserving the great end of life
insurance, by securing a large amount in
case of early death, it offers all t!:e best re
sults of Tontines, by securing increased ad
vantages to survivors, and a release from
the payment of premiums during the ad
vanced aires, when enterprise begins to flag
and the resources and energies of youth
and middle life be'in to diminish."
The Equitable's settlement of Tontine
policies now maturing all through this
country and Europe, and her constant and
largely increasing business annually under
her Tontine system mtre than verifies the
calculations and criticisms of Messrs. Phil
lips, Homans and Barnes upon the system.
