ILLINOIS ItEI'L'CLICAN CONVENTION TUIHD
DAY.
Springfield, .May 21. At fifteen min
utes past 4 o'clock this afternoon the larg
est, most tumultuous and remarkable state
convention ever held m Illinois, brought
its riotous career to a close after seven
hours continuous session to-day, thus end
ing six days of the wildest partisan fury,
three of which existed iu organized con
vention. This morning at 9 o'clock tho
sleepy, fagged out and ill-natured dele
gates promptly complied with Logan's or
ders, and were in their seats at the sound
of the president's gavel. Inured to hea y
parliamentary strains the swarthy senato
rial chiettain seemed the least fatigued,
and at once ordered the cruuk turned. The
machine began to grind, mid ground on
until the grist was completed, when the
boss stepped from the ra-jks of the Jack
son county delegation with the air of a con
Huerorand a malicious twinkle n his keen,
black eyes-, and informed the convention
that ho would now return his proxy to the
Jacksou county delegate from whom it was
obtained, and retired among the spectators.
A resolution was adopted ius'ructing the
delegates to Chicago to vote for Grant as a
m-.it.
THE STATE TICKCT.
During the nomination of a candidate for
governor it was generally believed by those
who tit I not 1 "low the nu'ti 'hat Cullom
would be defeat! in corsemieuce of the
furore tor and gair-s shown by Rinakerder
ini the bulletin'', but Gov. Cu loin hail hi
fores well ia hnnd and eider tti'l contol,
aud it wns not long until lie was nominated
with a whoop over Fort, Ilawloy, Smith,
Ridgway, Carr and Riuakc:. Hon. John
M. Hamilton, of IMoomitigton, was nominat
ed for lieut?nant-governor, hca 't'g Foun
tain. Saddler, .Lanes pud BAl For sec re
tary of state, however, there was more fric
tion. but State Senator Demont, of Lee, se
cured the nomination on the second ballot,
.lefeat',1)',' Harlow, Harper, Tage, Leiber
and Rjece.
Tiie most remarkable occurence of the
entire six days, and the freak ot the con
veution, was tho defeat of Auditor Needles
for renoniinatiou, which w:is iv.vomplished
by C. II. Srt-igei't of Kankakee, a one-nrmed
soldier, and until to-day en i'"Vuowu can
didate. This was 11 surprise to almost
everybody aud as much to the tew who iu
nu -tirated the movement rs anyone. Our
iug the entire canvass Needles has been re
garded as the fortunate one as lie hud no
opposition of supposed consequence, and
even when Swigert, who is a good man,
was nominated by request it was
KEOAIIDEI) A A .tOKIC.
One ballot only was taken during which
Long John We.itwortli sent for Swigert
who is good-looking, one armed soldier,
was lifted upon the shoulders of a delegate
Hint exhibited while his nrmles coat sleeve
wiggled at the convention. This was
enough, and prolonged cheering greeted
tlie hhow, followed by very exciting scenes,
when before on,' could realize the situation,
enough votes were changed from Needles
who ut one time had a majority to
Swigert and he was declared nominated.
A lively tuislo resulted iu tho nomina
tion of ex-State Tereasurer Rutz for state
treaurer over MeClaughcry aud Coats, nnd
the luisiuess of tho memorable convention
was concluded by the selection of James
McCartney of Wnyno for attorney-general,
defeating Cantleld, Shaw, Matthews, Root
and Wells. A handsome compliment was
paid Gen. Raum by an anti-Grant delegate
from SI. Clair, Gen. Kuelfner, in a speech
and by a resolution for his able manage
ment of tho mob and impartial treatment,
when Gov. Cullom was called, and beforo
quito all tho delegates could get out of tho
hall, ho read a seven minutes speech.
