The facade of the building is to be in the
"Manueliut" style, which was current at the
time of Dom Emmanuel, the Portugese sov

de Janeiro by the Portuguese maestro. Ar
thur Nnpnlcno, with an orchestra four hun
dred and fifty strong. All the Portuguese
societies of Rio will unite in a scries of lec
tures, receptions, etc., which have not yet
been fully decided upon, but will take
place on the 8th-10th of June.
An academy of science lias been organ
ized in Omaha, Nebraska, which promises
to be the means of gathering very impor
tant facts in neology. Several prominent
gentlemen, including two ladies, Mrs. Dr.
Dinsmoro and Mrs. Harriet 8. Brooks are
among the pi eminent members. The presi
dent, Mrs. Mr. Samuel Hughey, has a Eu
ropean, reputation, and 1b ranked among

our first scientists, As this section of the
country is rich in specimens, the new so
ciety will miike valuable contributions to
our collections. It bus already obtained
very rare fosi!s, and the society i.lso de
signs to interest the people in science and
to become an educator in tins direction.
Recently Mrn. Brooks gave an address on
colution and Protoplasm, which has been
printed in the newspapers, 'fids address
presents the subject so clearly that the
common reader can get un intelligent idea
ot the subject treated. Mrs. I!tnks lias
thus succeeded in popularizing this scien
tific question. In this she has done an im
portant service. Tins new academy of
science in Omaha is an evidence of intellec
tual activity in the new sections of the
west, and the work which such women
members as Mr?. Brooks are doing is an in
