THE SIMPLE TRUTH.
Tlio sun comes up nml tint sun goes down,
And day and night are the name ah one,
The year grows green and tho year grows
And what is it all when all is done?
Grains of sombre or sbinini; sand,
Gliding into and nut of the hand'i
The tishcr drops his net in the stream,
And a hundred atrcains are the same as
And tho maiden dreams her love-lit dream,
And what is all when all is done?
The net of the fisher the burden breaks,
And the dreaming dreamer always
To this Lampy would add two more verses:
The tide comes in and tho tides goes out,
Aim a Hundred tides are the same as
For who can say what I'm writing about,
And what is all when all is done?
But dipping my pen in the ink, and
Oh! nothing but taking it out fiain.
For people must read u gread deal of rot
(And rubbish and rot are the same as
They may as well read what I write. Why
But what is all when all is done?
Some lines of type, and a meter rough,
And not an idea in the whole of the
A RAY OF THE PUREST LOVE.
Now and then a ray of the purest,
brightest love, tender as true, darts gladly
atroes the dreary darkness of life, and
with its warm splendor overcomes for a
moment the coldness, the cruelty of the
world. It is ruch a ray as this that just
now is darting around in the region of
RidtBU hall, and proud we are to say that
its point of departure is the honest heart of
our young friend the Marquis of Lome. At
various times in the past noble deeds have
been wrought by noble men, but this young
nobleman is about to undertake the noblebt
died of all; a deed that no hero
hero, ancient or modern, never has dreamed
or attempting, and that will forever link
the name of Lome with ail that is loving or
brave. In point of fact, on Mondi-y next
the Marquis of Lome is to preside over a
grand celebration of the 61tt birthday of
A LETTER FROM CHICAGO.
CONVENTION NOTES EIGHTY TtlOCSAN'D VIK
ITOK8 I.N THE CITY BITTERNESS OK FEEL
ING AMONG CANDIDATES.
Chicago, Ills., June 3J, IfrSO.
The Republican convention met yester
day, and abrrut one o'clock p. in., perfected
temporary organization, with Hoar, a
Blaine man, as temporary chairman, and
The city has put on a holiday appear
ance. Flags and streamers f oat from every
hotel and at nearly every street-crotsing,
and the jam of human beings is simply
fearful, unparallellel. Besides the fifty
thousand citizens that crowd about the ho
tels and the headquarters of the different
delegations, there are, it is estimated, not
less than eighty thousand strangers litre.
The streets, for a dizen blocks, in every di
rection, taking the Palmer house as a cen
ter, are so crowded with surging masses,
that he is a bold man indeed who essays a
passage through tbem. Every hotel is
crowded, and the street cars are constantly
packed with those who are steking or have
secured, tood and shelter m the suburbs.
And I need not add, (this being a Republi
can convention l, that the saloon keepers arc
reaping a rich hat vest. From the fashion
able bar-room, with its two thousand dol
lar fittings, to the low, under ground beer
hole, the sounds of clinking glasses and
mingled voices, greet the ear of the passers-by,
from sun rise to midnight; and
from that hour until daylight, the bawdy
houses -a thousand in number, apparently
give out the sounds of revelry continu
ously. For a ve.ity, Chicago is just at
this time, a lively city; and not less than
5.000 of the strangers who are now con
tributing so liberally to tho support of its
hotels, dives, dens and brothels, will be
here, a week hence, "flat broke," awaitiug
remittances to enable them to get home. It
is safe to calculate that at least a thousand
of these will excuse, their applications for
help, by the plea that "sudden sickness"
lias fallen upon them, and that sickness, in
Chicago, costs enormously.
At this writing the indications are that
Grant will not be nominated. The revolt
in the New York, Pennsylvania and Vir
ginia delegations seems to rentier Ids de
feat a "fixed fact," and one
that Democrats deplore sincerely.
Tho anti-Grant pressure here, is tre
mendous, and must have its effect; but
Grant's losses cannot, by auy means, be
considered Bhiuc xains. Tho bitterness of
feeling between the two factions will lead
to a concentration of the Grant strength on
some other man, iu the event the nomina
tion of Grant is found impossible, and,
possibly, nay ccrtuiuly, compass Blague's
defeat. I u fur million in this particular,
however, you will receive by telegraph be
fore this studied and elegantly contracted
epistle reaches you. Tho Democrats of
Cairo and elsewhere, "builded better tlmu
they knew," for the Republican party, wheu,
by ranking toadying asses of themselves
they "hurrahed for Grant," and thus, by
creating a distrust of his stahvurtism,
weakened his strength among tho stalwarts
of his party everywhere,
Frod Grant is a consummnto and uncon
scionable ass. His personel appeals to del
egates to "vote for father and save their
reputations, for father will bo nominated
anyhow," and his efforts to bulldor.e the
negroes, who despise him, because he de
clared that "West Point was no place fur
nijgers" this young man is tho laughing
stock of everybody, who does not hold him
at what he is a fool. Hut Good-bye,
A. Gl'STAVUS IK'MIILE.

SCHOOL PICNIC THE BOAT HACKS PER
Editor Cairo Bnlletlu:
The Sunday school picnic on tho 4th
inst. was not quite what was anticipated,
as tho rain prevented any out-door amuse
ments before noon, but tho time was pleas
antly spent with music, election of, and
crowning tho May queen, etc. It was
agreed to elect a little girl, which was ac
cordingly done. Annie Holden seemed to
be the choice of the people and was conse
quently crowned "queen of May'' by Judge
Sarnmoris. She bore tho honor with dig
nity and lady-like demeanor. After dinner
the sun shone out brightly, and tho par
ticipants thought that they could safely ven
ture to the woods, where they could indulge
in swinging, playing croquet, tishing, etc.,
which they did; and when the shades of
evening were gathering around, all dis
persed for their homes, feeling tSat the en
joyment repaid the trouble.
The young friends of Miss Lillie Light
ter were invited to tho residence of the
mother's on the evening of the 5th inst., for
the purpose of celebrating her sixteenth
birthday. They were very nicely enter
tained, The "New York Store Co.'s" ware house

Miss Jennie Warwick has returned from

the school at East Cape Girardeau, for next

convenient to be with her many friends in

The wheat in this immediate vicinity
looks very well. It will be necessary to

Dr. Gibbs and wife returned from
Springfield last Saturday.
There was to have been a skiff race from
Thebes to Commerce to-day, but from the
way in which the rain is pourinc at the
present time, we presume it will be indefi
nitely postponed. Mr. Stutz and Mr.
Mansker are the parties mostly interested.
