The golden hour, on angel wines,
Flew o er me and my dearie;
For Hear to me at light and life
Wa my tweet Highland Mary."
Mary Campbell, who inspired some of
Burns' Cr.fst effusions, and among others
the aboe lines, was the object of his youth
ful and purest attachment, She was the
daughter of a mariner ol Ayrshire, in Scot
land, and when Burns first knew her and
loved her was employed as a dairy-maid in
the castle of Montgomery. A monument
has been erected to her memory in Green
ock churchyard. One side contains a bas
relief of the two lovers, representing their
parting when they plighted their troth and
exchanged Bib es across the stream around
the castle of Montgomery. The inscription
is simply, ,
Ge.mis and Love,
Bckhs and Highland Mart.
According to aome authors the lovers
never met alter this parting, but according
to others, Burn, who undoubtedly was at
one time on the point of leaving Scotland
for the West Indies, bad persuaded Mary to
emulate with him as his wife, and she, com
ing to Greenock to meet him, was there
stricken down with fever and died in a few
days. Thin seems to be the more probable
conclusion, for Burns, although he remain
ed in Scotland, had previously written,
"Will ye po to the Indie, my Mary,
And leave old Scotia I inore?
Will ye go to the Indies, my Mary.
Acros the Atlantic roar V
Mary's mother died at Greenwich, Sep
tember 27, 1627, at an advanced age. Af
ter Mary's death two letters were received
by her from Barns, which, unfortunately
for posterity, she destroyed, giving as the
reason that she could never read them with
out shedding tears.
The Bible in two volumes given to Mary
by Bums is stiil preserved in her family,
and the following passages of scripture
were written by him on their fly-leaves:
On one, "Thou shalt not swear by my name
falsely I am the Lord." Leviticus, chap
ter xiv, verse 121. On the othw, "Thou
shalt not forswear thyself, but perrm unto
the Lord thy (or, according to some, 'all
thy') vows." (St. Matthew, chapter v.,
verse 33). If the latter text has been cor
rectly quoted as written, then Burns either
from having written only from memory or
intentionally, has altered it, the true read
ing bcin;j : "But shall perlorm unto the
Lord thine oaths."
This episode is the brightest in Burns'
stirring life, and the question may fairly
be asked, what would have bceu the re
sult as to both Bad their projected mar
riage taken place. They were unquestion
ably devotedly attached, and Burns cher
ished her memory to the last hour of his
life. Might the result have been written
"Ye. God and man miclit now approve me
II tho hodft lived and lived to love me,"
Or might Irving have told ttie story,
"A woman's whole life is a history of the
affectious. The heart is her world
She embarks her whole soul in the traffic of
affection, and if shipwrecked, her case is
hopeless, for it is bankrupcy of the heart."
