GREAT AND IMPORTANT LIBRARIES.
The largest and most important libraries
in the world arc: First the National
Library at Paris the oldest and largest
library in tho world, founded 1350. It
contained in 1874 2,000,000 printed books
and 1,500,000 manuscripts. The British
Museum, (founded four hundred years af
ter) and the Imperial Library of St. Peters
burg claim to be next in size. In 1874
both had 1,100,000 books. The Vatican
Library at Rome supposed to be among the
largest is surpassed by many European
collections. It contains 105,000 printed
books and 25,000 manucripts. The largest
library in the United States is' the library
of congress, which contained in 1874 261,
000 volumes. The next ia size is the Bos
ton Public with 260,000 volumes.
. Harvard University contains 200,000.
While these last named are said to be the
most important and the largest in the
United States there are many more whose
volumes number from 25,000 up to 148,000.

of Cooper have the true epistolary charm
and these is the strongest proof that tbey

Smith regrets the decay of letter writing

a classic, and went early to India as princi
pal of the Deccaa college at Poona.
