A NOT 11 11 EXAMPLE OK THE MANNER J3
WOIcn THE EQUITABLE LIFE ASSURANCE
COMPANY DEALS WITH ITS PATRONS.
New York Commercial Advertiser.
The business promptness that character
izes the action of the Equitable Life- Assu
rance society ut the United States has be
come proverbial, and it is with great pleas
ure therefore that we refer to another case
which again shows the manner in which
business is conducted by that institution.
This case can best be introduced by the
Englewooo, N. J., April 26.
To tbe Eqnttable Life Asuirance society of the
Gentlkjikn: I desire to express my ap
preciation of the honorable settlement
made by your society of a policy on the
life of my late husband, Charles T. Ches
ter; payment of which might easily have
been refused if you had felt inclined to
take advantage of his inadvertence, espe
cially as what was known to me to bo an
inadvertence admitted of an altogether
different interpretation. (Signed)
Lt't'HETIA L. C'llLM'Ell.
Investigation revealed the facts of the
case to be as follows: On the 5th day of
July, 1808, the Equitable issueu an insur
ance on the life of the late Charles T.
Chester. On the 5th day of July, 1670,
owing to reverses, Mr. Chester was unable
to pay the premium, and after the lapse of
uie usual grace ot ninety days, this policy
was ucciareu nun and void lor non-pay
ment of premium. Some months elapsed,
and Mr. Chester died. Aniorji,' his papers
was iouua tnis toneited policy of insurance,
containing wiinin ns lows a oner note ad
dressed to tho Equitable Life Assurance
society by the beneficiary (Mr. Chester's
wife), requesting the company to issue a
paia up poucy.
Lpon this letter beintr shown to the
widow she stated that she had written it at
the request of her husband and given it to
hira to be delivered to the society within
the ninety days of grace, during which she
had a right to ask for a paid-up policy,
adding that her 'husband no doubt had
placed it in his safe, intending to deliver
it, but through the multifarious business
troubles pressing upon his mind, he bad in
advertently left the papers without making
a proper aeuvcry oi rneui to tne society.
This letter, together with the facts, was
brought betore the officers of the Equitable
Life Assurance society a few days ago by
the beneficiary, with misgivings, however,
knowing that the policy had been forfeited.
A diligent search was immediately made
among tne records of the company, and it
was found that on the 17th day of May,
1879, Mr. Chester called and asked for what
amount a paid-up policy would be issued
to his wife, and a calculation was made
showing that it would amomnt to the sum
of siitecn hundred and thirty dollars fl,
630), provided the policy was surrendered
upon tne written request of the beneficiary
(his wife) within the time limited by tbe
contract in question.
mth these facts before them the
officers decided that it was evi
dently a case of good faith,
ana naa Mrs. Chester's letter been de
livered to them at the proper time, instead
of wing placed bv her husband in his
safe, a policy would have been issued for
the 6um named, viz., $1,030. It wag there
tore determined to accept proofs of loss
from Uie wnebeiary for this amount, and
tne money has been paid to the widow.
Hie policy Holders of this institution
have reason to be thankful that its affairs
are administered bv men whose first con
sideration is honor. This is the same com
pany that refused to join in contesting the
claims of the widow of the late Colonel
Uwight, of Binghamton, being the only
company wrucn paid its policy of 50,000.
As a further evidence of its good faith
with thepublic.it has lately made all its
luch fair dealing cannot fail to bring
its own reward through an increased pat
ronage, and which we learn this society is
