The R. R. Springer added lightly here,

The Grant part of the Springer did not
show up during her stay.
Capt. Sam Ryman of Nashville offers
to bet l,0CK);to $2,500 that he can name the
next president. Evidently C'aty. Sam has
a high regard for General Hancock.
The Evansville and Cairo packet com
pany's new etcamer, II. F. Dexter, will be
out in about 20 days. The company will
run a daily line to Cairo next season.
Capt. John Greenough was a passenger
on the Gus Fowler yesterday, for Metro
polis, to look after the several barges being
built there for the owners of the Iron
Captain Lew Allen, late captain ot the
Alphabetical J. B. M. Kchlor, is one of the
pilots on the Shrcveport, having left the
Kehlor in New Orleans, in charge of Capt.
W. C. Kimblo.
The captain of the Idlewild reports
having passed the steamer Pittsburgh un
der way, easily, on two different occasions.

Bitter creek will please note.
The Hillman will be down from Ta
ducah next Sunday. She will take an ex
cursion from Hickman on the 4th, and has
a full trip engaged for Johnsonville, Tenn.,
trom the bends below.
The J. W. Gaff burned a boiler at
Slmwnectown, but succeeded in working
slowly to this point, where Capt. "Wise
found it impossible to procure boiler and
makers. She got away Sunday night, hav
ing effected such repairs, as would take her

Capt. Bob AViso of the J. W. Gaff sent
a telegram from Slmwnectown to Cairo
last Saturday morning,ordering a boiler and
makers, and iron to be sent to him on the
railroad Saturday evening, up to lost night
(Monday) tho message had not arrived at
Cairo, and Capt. Wise, naturally feels a
littto guilty about it. Ho has tho satisfac
tion of knowing that his packet can beat
tho Western Union on any day in the year,
from Shawneetown to Cairo.

routes are quickly abandoned with tho
completion of railroads, so tho huge, dras

Tho first rain of any consequence hero in
several weeks visited this city to-day, Tho
storm lasted nearly all the afternoon and is
not yet over. Tho value of this rainfall to
farmers and gardeners is beyond calcula
tion, as vegetation was drying and wither
ing for want of water. '
Thcro is as yet no sign of the rise com
ing out of tho Mississippi and no uneasi
ness regarding it is felt hero.
Business continues without material
change, The unsettled condition of other
markets effects this to some extent and
buyers are holding off. Stocks of leading
articles arc Email, but fully up to the de
mand. FLOUR The demand for old stoks in
choice and fancy grades, is moderately ac
tive. Low grades are very dull.
HAY We have no change to note.
Choice continues in fair demand at low
prices. Common is not called for.
CORN The demand for white is steady
at quotations for milling purposes. There
is very little shipping demand, and the or
der trade is light.
OATS The market is oppressively dull,
and prices are lower.
MEAL Choice continues steady and
BRAN Plenty and dull.
BUTTER Choice is in good demand
and scarce. Common is very dull.
EGGS Quiet and easy. Receipts are
ample for the demand.
POl'LTRY Spring chickens are in ac
tive request. Receipts of all kinds find
FRUIT Berries of all kinds find ready
POTATOES The season is over for old
potatoes, and the market is supplied with
new from country wagons.
