A SUGGESTIVE LEGEND.
Thero is a terrible legend of Crim-Tar-tary,
concerning a very massive and im
posing edifice, which is also very ancient.
It is so vast and Jmpressivo that travellers
are profoundly affected, cepecially those
who como from countries where a certain
number of persons are annually destroyed
by burning theatres and falling buildings.
One such traveller was gazing with admir
ation upon tho edifice, in company with his
mnjesty, the king of the country, and he
could not restrain himself from saying;
CAIRO BULLETIN: TTTlTn av wnpvfvr tttt4
"0 Kinc, what is that secret of tht won.
dcrful strength of the building, that it has"
neither tumbled down nor burned up?''
Rut his majesty the king ol the country was
coy, and forebore to answer. Reipg press
ed more closely, however, at length he
answered, "O stranger, its strength is a se
cret of the state."
The stranger was not dismayed, and after
much entreaty, his pertinacity overcame
the reluctanco of the king, who finally
said, with solemnity : "O stranger, when
my ancestor began to build this temple, it
was laid upon insecure foundations. There
upon he sent for another builder, and said
to him : 'The present corner-stone will be
raised, and tho present builder placed un
der it alive, and ipon the stone laid upon
the" body, you will proceed to erect the
wall. Should it le weak or insufficient, it
will be taken down; the corner-stone again
raised, you will be placed under it alive, the
stone will be again laid, and the building
proceed once more.' My ancestor said noth
ing lurther; and you now know, O strang
er, the secret of thse massive walls, and
why this building dees not tumble down."
The stranger, says the Crim-Tartar leg
end, went his way uch meditating the
marvellous government which wa9 able to
prevent flimsy build.ng. -Editor's Easy

Leading Principles of the AMERICAN BOOK EXCHANGE: .
I. Publish only books of real value.
II. Work upon the basis of present cost of making books, about one-hair what It was a few year, ago.
III. Sell to buyers direct, and avc them the to 60 per cent commlssson commonly allowed to.
The cost of books w hen made 10.000 at a time is but fraction of the cost when made 5flf at a time
adopt the low price and sell the large quantity.
V. Use good type, paper, etc.. do careful printing, and strong, rcat binding, but avoid all "padding,
fat and heavy-leaded type, poBgy paper and gaudy binding, which are to commonly resorted to to malts
