The Canada weatliur prophet seems to
hit it pretty bquurely every time ho pre
dicts "streaks" of cold in tho days that
should l.y rights be the hottest. These
first few days of Augutit have Itcen, as coin
pared with tho previous oncB, decidedly
winterish, To-day has been bright and
clear and somewhat warmer, but tho at
mosphere smacks a great deal of October
We have no changes to note in the gen
eral market. Tho dullness of last month
has lapped over in this, and leading arti
cles rule (juiet and easy.
In river circles business is moderately
brisk, with fair amounts ol freight offering,
and plenty of tonnage to take it away.
FLOUR The market is steady at pre
vious quotations and the demand fair.
HAY New hay is coming in and prices
arc weaker. Receipts aro small yet the
market is dull at Monday's prices.
CORN There is some inquiry for choice
white and light stocks to draw front.
OATS Prices opened early in the week
at 20 cents above the view of purchasers.
As might be expected, concessions were
nude and tales to-day were at 2 j cents.
MEAL Steady but easy and quiet. City
meal sells about as fast us manufactured.
I5RAX Plenty and dull, at quotations.
JJL'TTER Market steady and un
changed. EGGS The last few days of cool weuth
er has stiffened the market, and receipts
find ready buyers at 9 cts. Shippers count.
POULTRY Unchanged. Choice spring
chickens find ready sale, other kinds are
PEACHES Receipts are very light by
consignment and ail choice stock finds
GRAPES Receipts find ready sale with
prelerencc given to choice concords.
WATERMELONS There is no demand
except for local trade and this

The City of Helena having grounded
at Ste. Genevieve, did not reach Cairo until
noon yesterday. She had a nice trip for
Vicksburg and added largely here.
The Great Eastern has been promised
seventeen thousand tons as a starter, to in
duce her to come into New Orleans.
Should she succeed in making the jetties
safely on her out trip, it will be positive
prool of the triumph of Capt. Eads.
The Fannie Tatum, on her maiden trip,
passed up to Paducah last'night, Capt.
Bruner in command. She will ply in the
trade for the present. Capt. John Conway
has charge of the office. She will arrive
here on her short trip, Thursday and on the
Paducah trip Sunday.
