An attempt was made Sunday night to
garrote an old gentleman by the name of
McClintock, who was a deck passenger on
the Schenck for New Orleans. About dark
a skiff pulled up alongside of the Schenck
(which was laying some distance above the
wharfboat), and two men disembarked,
while the skill was immediately
pulled out of sight. The ruffians
at once caught the ' old man
by the throat, and was proceeding to search
his pockets, when his efforts to get loose
aroused the watchman and others on deck,
and the men ran; one going out over the
truard and scrambling up the bank, while
the other ran out over the fan tail and
leaped into the river, and probably got
ashore at some point below the boat.. Mc
Clintock escaped with but few scratches,
but was considerably frightened. The as
sailants were negroes, Politics not known.
