THE DAILY BULLETIN.
W. C. AND L. ASSOCIATION COLUMN.
Edited In the Interest oftlio I'uWIc Library.
MEN, WOMKN AND BOOKS.
The four volumes of plates representing
the treasures of the museum at Naples, iu
painting, sculpture, bronzes, pottery, etc.
sent from Italy some months ago by Mrs.
Anna E. Saffonl, as a gift to the Cairo Li
brary, liavo recently been bound in two
handsome, tubstantial books. Jo all lovers
of classic art, students, and persons of cul
ture, they will be most interesting, will re
pay careful inspection and study.
Miss La.nwju, of Old Salem, MabS., has
discovered an excellent clay deposit near
Uass river, and having found un ancient
pottery oven near by, she .has opened a
studio in her ;uaint old down-east home
stead. She has begun there the manufac
ture of pottery and porcelain, which is said
to be remarkably fine.
The improvements of the Cooper Insti
tute building in this city aie now
virtually completed, at a cost of fi0,000.
They were necessitated by the need of more
room for the Women's School of Art and
the Night Art School. The additions con
sist of a large apartment erected at tlie top
of tlie edifice at the southern end, extend
ing from T'iird to Fourth avenue, and of
an extension on the Third avenue side.
American ladies make a very creditable
exhibition of work thisytar ia the Paris
Salon. Miss Heuston, of Sacramento, has
a fine bit of flower painting on a satin
screen: Miss Nina Fagnani, the portrait
of a child painted on porcelain; Miss Crock
er, of Portland, a good portrait in charcoal;
Miss K. Greatorex, flowers remarkable in
execution and color; and MissE. E. Great
orex, a finely finished figure of an old wo
man "Mere Elizabeth."'
Mme. Janauscheck amused Lerself du
ring one vacation by translating Dante's
Inferno from Italian into Bohemian and
then back into English. Mr. Longfellow
told her it was very we" done. She has
acted the Iphigenia of Sophocles in the or
iginal Greek, and French plays in French.
She speaks German, Italian, Spanish, Rus
sian and Polish, and reads Latin flu
ently. To strangers and visitors to our city it is
a matter of surprise and pleasure to find
Cairo possessing such a tasteful, beautiful
and well furnished library room. Many
cheering words and kind compliments at the
marked success attending the efforts of a
few ladies, are received Irom those having
no personal interest 111 Ca'ro, but who evi
dently have a better impressit n of her
taste and intelligence from visiting the
library. A little more interest on the part
of the citizens together with some substan
tial tokens of the same, would be of mu
tual benefit and react favorably upon the
community at large.
Since the sixteenth century the tide ol
progress in woman has been ceaseless,
though the conservative element has corn
batted her at every step.
Needle work, dancing, and rules of be
havior were the only things taught girls in
America up to the time of the Revolution,
In 1779 two Yale students taught a class
of girls in arithmetic, geography and com
position. The first female academy in New Eng
land was opened in 1789.
Then came the "Great Reform"' iu
Boston, which threatened to mar all woman
kind, to destroy all womanly delicacy, all
This was followed by a high school for
girls in 1S23, and this by the schools cf
Mary Lyon and Mrs. Willard, who first at
tempted the systematic training of women
for definito purposes, and this by the open
ing of Oberlin college for the co-education
ot the sexes. '
The history of the advancement of wo
man is a grand chapter, worthy ot the
study of all, both men and women.
Are we too ambitious, if we express- the
wish that some of the hours spent in the
study of fashiou magazines were better
spent in the study of this one grand chapter
in the history of the human race?
But we have not timo to tell you of tho
prejudices, the ridicule, and the rebukes
with which every measure looking to tte
advancement of women in education, oc
cupation and privileges hug been met. It
has been only tho bravo who huvo been
ublo to bo true.
CniED OK Piunkino. "A young friend
of mine was cured of nu insatiable thirst
for liquor, which had so prostrated him
that he was unable to do any business, Hu
was entirely cured by tho uso of Hop Bit
ters. It allayed nil that burning thirst;
took away tho appetite for liquor; made
his nerves steady, and ho has remained a
sober and steady man for more than two
years, and has no desire to return to his
cups; I know of a number of others that
have been cured of drinking by it." From
