A BITE II BITTEN.
St. Loiis It. publican.
They were playing faro yesterday morn
ing in a room on Pine street, not many
doors from Sixth. It was early in the
morning, full four hours before daybreak.
There was a goodly gathering around the
lwaid, and all went well until a pair uf
visitors stepped in. One was evidently an
old customer, for he saluted tiie dealer in
a familiar w.iy. He was dressed like one of
the many who secure a livelihood by
showing strangers from the country how to
buck the tiger and place their money on
the wrong card. His companion looked
like a man who had just arrived from the
rural districts. His pan:s were tucked in
his boot-tops, and his slouched hat he wore
in the country fx-hion. Hut the hat shaded
a pair of eyes that sparkled with uueommon
lustre and a fare and foiehead that were
not tanned and brown as an agriculturist's
should be. When the two entered the bank,
the first described' above approached the

He's good for a clean thousand if we only
wi.rk him right."
"Well, you know how to work him.
Let him come right in," said the dealer.
"That's all right enough, but he wont
iro in unless I do, and I can't because
I'm broke. Stake me?"
The dealer spoke to the proprietor of the
place. The proprietor said : "Stake him,
ot course," and the dealer handed the sup
posed roper-inflO worth of change. The
latter took it, put it away down in his
pocket, and, nodding to the stranger fmm
Lincoln county, said : "Let's go down and
interview bis 'nibs' on the corner." His
'nibs" was at the corner saloonist. When
they got down there the pants came out of
that agriculturist's boot tops, the lapels
of his coat were throw back, and disclos
ed a city tie and collar, and tiie hat
placed in its proper position revealed any
thing but an unsophisticated countenance.
The two shook hands, said the scheme
had worked well, and then stood up by
the bar until more than half their ill
gotten gain had passed over it. Then
they went out on the sidewalk, locked
arms to prevent chcIi other from falling,
and told all whom they met on the way
they had beaten the bank.
NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT,
Essential, in fact, to the preservation of
bodily health, than to restore the activity of
the kidneys and bladder, when they per
form their functions imperfectly, since
when they do, a large proportion of the de
bris or waste matter of the system, for
which they are one of the chief outlets, re
mains in and poisons it. Furthermore the
organs themselves become diseased, as a
consequence of their inactivity. That fine
invigorant, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters,
possesses diuretic properties of a high order,
and without unduly stimulating these or
gans, promotes a vigorous and regular per
formance of the duty assigned to them by
nature. At the same time, thistime-honored
medicine nets as a regulator of the stomach,
liver and bowels, and as a rcnovantof vital
energy and nerve tranquility. A suitable
trial cannot fail to establish the truth of
