"Curfew "hall not rlti to-night."
The poem to which wo refer is founded
on au incident in English history. In the
days of the Protictorate, a young soldier,
was condemned to dio "at the ringing of
tho Curfew." His friends interceded for
him in vain; and a fair young girl, who was
attached to him, pleaded with his judges to
spare his life at least until the hour, when
she could see the stern Cromwell herself,
but her efforts were fruitless. Sho then

The poem was written by Miss Rosa
Ilartwlek (now the wife of Edmund C.
Thorpe) in April, 187. She was born at
Jlishawaka, Ind., July 18th, 1 8-10, and was
in her 17th year when she read this little
story of "Love and Loyalty,"' and told it
so sweetly in rhyme. It was first print' d
in 1870, in the Detroit . Commercial Ad
vertiser. Mrs. Thorpe was married in 1871,
and now resides at Litchfield, Mich. She
has written other poems, but none more
popular than this.
The ringing of the curfew bell (from
convrefeu, to cover up the fire)wasa prac
tice established in England by its Norman
conqueror. All the inhabitants were re
quired to cover their fires, extinguish their
lights, and retire to rest at nightfall, and
the bell was rung as a signal at the ap
pointed hour. In France this bell was
rung long before the time of William the
conqueror, as a sate guard against fires.

with cypress trees, and shut iu with high
walls, wo found this quiet resting-placo of

Many of our readers tiro aware of (ho
fact that in 18110 envelopes were first used,
but few know the curious circumstances
which led to their invention and use. The
facts are us follows : 8. K. Brewer was nn
an English stationer nnd hook-seller, nnd
in order to make his shop.window look
attractive, ho would go to sucli means ns
forming pyramids of paper, beginning with
alargc-sizo sheet and tapering off at the

top with a small size (16 nio.), using
cut cards to bring them up more
tu a point. Ho soon had numerous calls
for "that dear little paper" (meaning the
cut card i, which induced the stationer to
cut paper to small sizes. But these gave
no room for directing upon, and he began
making envelopes, getting metal plates to
cut the sizes nnd shapes. Orders rapidly
multiplied, until Brewer was compelled to
make arrangements with a London firm,
Messrs. Dobbs & Co., to manufacture them.
Thus it was by accident that the envelope
was invented and put into use.
The proof of the valuo of any article is
its popular use anil the testimony in its
