That "there is nothing new under' the sun" is as trite as true; and possibly, when the Hebrew king said il, he was himself but repeating an undent proverb. Uoswell tells uh that Dr. Johnson wus so convinced of the fact, that be thought of writing a book to demonstrate that the amount of in vention in the world was very limited, and that really the same incidents and the same imagery, with but slight variation, have sufficed all the authors who have ever written. Unfortunately, the learned lexicographer never executed his idea; but the position be assumed was perfectly ten able. Thoughts nre few, and run in grooves; and there run be no doubt that much which has been denounced as pla giarism is often quite as original, to the author himself, us the bulk of. what the word receives as a genuine addition to its stock. Ok the women and the men in Thacke ray's books, Mr. Charles T. Cmigdon says: ''Has the reader noticed the peculiarity ot Thackeray's wives, that almost always they are superior to their husbands? People say that Thackeray thought meanly of women and depicted them with something of a satirical disrespect. I have often ventured to take different and precinely opposite ground. I do not think that Thackeray had much regard fur Doiidiceas or for im possible Unas; be understood well enough the frailties of the female character; but I have never been able to see why Ethel, in 'The New-comes,' is not infinitely superior in all the best attributes of character to the somewhat spooney ('live. He seems to be rather than herself the lay ligure of the novel. He has been very much admired; children have been named alter him even upon these western shores; but what does be do through all the bonk except wear good 'clothes, paint mediocre pictures, marry Rosy, quarrel with bis mother-in-law, and be dreadfully sorry for the mis fortunes of that dear old mn, the colonel? Nj; upon the whole, I preter Thackeray's women to his men. Mrs. rendeunis is a particular friend of mine, because she is so much more sensible than her lord. Upon the whole, I do not see that Thackeray's male characters, nlways excepting the dear old colonel are particularly winning. But bis women get a great hold of me. It is as if be made them and clothed them in the radience of a line costume, or in the purity of white, and then took them upon the palm of bis great right hand ami showed them to us gracious, beautiful and loving. I believe that women, as a rule, shake their pretty little heads at Thackeray. They are much mistaken. This great stal wart creature is their champion." An interesting manuscript was recently discovered at the city library ot Treves. It is a fragment ot an old French poem, whose author, nccording to marginal uotes, is no other than Picl.ard Cieur tie Lion. On his return from the Holy Land he was shipwrecked on the coast of Dalmatia, and held a captive by Henry VI, in a castle of the Tyrol. This poem is entitled "Sainte Norma et sou lils Saint Devy" ami was probably composed during his captivity. An English woman, Mary Fitzgibbon, is the author of a recently published account ol"ATrip to Manitoba,'' of which The Academy says: "In view of the approach ing construction of the Canadian Pacific railway, this record of a lady's experiences ol her journey to the great north-west ter ritory of this Dominion will, no doubt, be interesting to many, especially as Manitoba is considered to be a good locality on all grounds for the emigrant to settle in. It is one of the most healthy climates in the world, ami a particularly fertile soil. The present province of Manitoba was formerly part of the Hudson Bay Company's posses sions, but in ISf'i!) wus transferred to the Dominion government, ami has seemingly derived much benefit from the change. The volume before us is written in a chatty, unassuming style, and may be advan tageously substituted for u novel on a wet day at the seaside." A wnrricn in The London Antiquary de scribes the present condition and the re cently acquired possessions of the British Museum. During 17!), (IGl,o!)l persons were admitted to view the general collec tions, a considerable increase over the numbers admitted in previous years; in 187-1 there were .101, 050; in 1S75, 52;!,:il7; in 187(i, 50:1,5:15 ; in 1877, Ml),''!; and in 1870.4'IS,510. During the past year pro gress lias been niado in arrangements gfor tho removal of tho natural history collec tions and in preparations for their reception in tho new building designed for them at South Kcnsim? ton. New cases and fittings liavs been provided and erected for tho de partments of botany and mineralogy and in part for that of geology ; und the transfer ence of these threo collections to tho new museum will probubly )0 effected in the INDIGESTION: :::::'w I) ::::rP::E:E:EEE::'Nol(l COSTIVKNKSSE course ol the oresent year. The gallaries vacated by them will be at once made use of fur the exhibition of objects of nrelee ologieal interest, which have been accumu lating for many years, ami from want of space have been stored away in impertectly lighted rooms in the basement. In conse quence of coming into possession of a con siderable sum of money accruing under tho w ill of the late Mr. William White, wiio dieil in the year 18'.':i, the trustees have had it in their power to consider plans for adding to the museum building. These will inrludc a substantial addition to the south eastern side of the museum, and an extension ot the gallery for exhibition of Creek sculpture. The latter work will be at once proceeded with. Two buildings for the reception of the sculpture hitherto placed 111 sheds under the museum portico have been already erected. The valued expressman Mr. J. 1). Kline. of Sheboygan. The circutiistatices attending the ad mission of lady art students to the acad emy, says the-London Quern, are rather amusing. Within our own recollection the presi'iiee of a lady in any of the art schools of the Koyal Academy would have occa.-ioiieil ulino.st as much astonishment, a.s if one "of the siatucs from which the .students draw, had, like Pygmalion's famous creation, conic down from its pedestal and walkc 1 about. Hut some years ago. when the drawing", which it is competent to any one desiring to bccynie a student to send in, were exhibited before those of the council having to decide which of them were good enough to entitle the authors to be entered on the books as probationers, Jilieiv was one in which the initials of the Christian names hav ing been written on the work, the judges were unable to say to what sex the aspirant belonged. When this was inquired into, it wu discovered that the successful competitor, whose drawing hail been without hesitation accepted, was a young lady, ami great was tho iLstonishinent and dismay among tho judge. There, wus a meeting of tho council, and a ransacking of the aca demy archives, to see if there was any precedent for such an event, or any thing to forbid what .some considered an unfortunate innovation of an old es tablished rule, hi the result nothing wus discovered to prevent the admis sion of the lady applicant, whom tho rouncil. in order ii"t to stultify them selves, were romp. died to accept as a student. This success wa at once fol lowed up by others similar in rliarnrti'i", until now we believe it is Hot UllfiV (jllelltly the eae that the larger portion uf successful candidates :it'e ladies. mm Wu believe it is the style to affect con tempt for things that are old. Not so, however, with Dr. Bull's Cough Syiup, which has stood the popular test of 111 years' use, und is more thought of than ever before. How's Hie J5aby. "How's the baby?"
