Whili'iiinli." 'I'liee diamonds, which
now belong to Mr, Mill by right of pur
chase, were formerly the property of
the late Duke of Piriinsw iek, whose famo
as a connoisseur of gems and as a col
lector was unrivaled in Kuropn. When
the Duke died a few years ago at Wene
va, the i-ily of his adoption, where he
preferred residing. bequeathed hi.s

live-eighths karals. They are equally
perfect, and guaranteed to be wiUiout

pin to Mr. Hill was .,oiiO. A meg
nilicent diamond cross weighing ;v little
over twenty karals, cotnpoM-d of eleven
seines averaging nearly two karals, is a
splendid ornament.. Thc-.n diamonds
are perfectly matched, of the purest
quality, and also guaranteed. The cen
tre .stone weighs two and one-half kar
als. The cross, which louks like a
blaze of tire, is attached to a gold neck
lace of antique Roman workmanship.
The cost of the cross was l,0oO, or
.') per karat. Two pairs of earrings
weighing six and one-half karats each,
and one stone exactly balancing the
other. The diamonds am guaranteed
perfect. The price paid w as 1 ..":; 1 for
one pair, and 1 JV for the other, the
slight difference in value heing occa
sioned by the difference in the mount

To Destroy the Ro3e Slug.
Various applications have been tried
with more or less success, among which
the most certain in its effects is whaln
oil soap suds, made in the proportions
of one pound of I ho soap to eight gal
lons of water. The objections to this
remedy are that it has a disagreeable
odor and is liable to discolor the open
ing buds. Dusting freely with powder
ed white hellebore has also been tried
with very good sucees-, ami it. may bu
Used iu water by dissolving a tablesjioon
f ill of the powder in two gallons or boil
ing water. The pyretliruui powders
have as yet been used only to a limited
extent, but with the prospect that thor
oughly applied I hey would prove eflect
ual. I.imo has long been used with sat
isfactory results, especially if applied
when the dew is on the plants.
Cnpt. K. II. P.eebe, of (laleria. 111.,
wrote to the Carilrnrrny Monthly that
he had found powdered sulphur applied
when the leaves were wet, certain de
struction, and Miss K. A. Smith corrob
orates his experience. Wood ashes were
strongly recommended in the Country
ficiilrwin. The Paris green mixture
has been used with excellent results on
bushes where it is not desired to cut or
pluck the (lowers, but in view of the
other available means of destruction is
not to he recommended. AH applica
tions should be made just at night, as
they are then more certain of coming
in contact with the insects. Something
can also bo done to prevent the flies
from maturing. As the cocoon in which
the larv;e hibernates is very frail, and
as the latter does not survive the rup

oughly stirring and pulverizing "the soil

should, before setting, be immersed in
a tub of water, and have every particle
