A photographin sunshine rceonler lnw
been invented by dipt. Abney. It
consists of a semi -cylindrical box, with
a Hat lid, in the centre of which is n
small hole. Round, tho Inside of the
cylinder stiltis of sensitivo paper aro
fixed, and the instrument is then so
) laced; that the sun, the hole, and the
centre line of the paper are in the same
pL'tee. As tho sun moves, therefore,
its track will be recorded on tho paper.
A paper saiil to be proof against afire
and water is prepared in this way: Af
ter a mixture of two-thirds ordinary pit
per pulp and one-third asbestus has
been thoroughly incorporated, it is
steeped in a solution of common salt
and alum. It is then niado into paper,
which is finely coaled with shellac:
One of the officers of tho steamship
City of Berlin states that he has received
tho current of a Slemcn's dynamo
electric machine throiighthe legs, trunk,
left arm, thumb, and one finger. Ho
says he did not like the sensation, "but
that ho could have endured it if neces
sary, although the current was capable
of giving four lights of four hundred

A writer in Nature, Rays that beforo
the voyage of, the Challenger scarcely
thirty deep-sea fishes wore known; that,
although this number has now been
very much increased, yet no new types
of families have been discovered, and
that, although perfectly novel and very
interesting modification of certain or
gans have Ix-en met with, there has been
nothing more discovered than what
might have been expected from what
was known previously of the group.
It, appears from one of the recently
published memoirs of tho science
department of the University of Tokio
that there is nothing to warrant the be
lief entertained some years ago regard
ing the enormous quant ities of gold and
copper to bo found in Japan. What
ever rich and easily-worked deposits of
either metal may have existed there,
they were long since exhausted. Any
remunerative extraction ofgold or copper
must now be oursued according to
scientific methous and by persons pos
sessing capital. Coal is just now the
most profitable mineral brought to the
surface in Japan. There aro annually
exported 160.000,,X) catties (a catty is
1 pounds.) but the coal imortod is yet
about 47,S96,fX)0 catties. Copper ranks
second, silver third, gold fourth in tho
mireral wealth of Japan.
A simple magic- lantern, from the
construction and use of which a good
deal of instruction and amusement may
bo derived during winter evenings, is
described in the Scientific American.
A small box, and kerosene lamp with an
argand burner, a little fish-globe filled
with pure water, and a common double
or plano-convexlens aro all the mater
ials necessary to make it A hole is
bored in the tp of the box to permit
the chimney of the lamp to pass through
and allow the heat and" the products of
combustion to escape. In tho side of
the box a round hole is cut large enough
to admit a portion of the globe, which
is suspended insido the box close to the
lamp. A piece of common window
glas is then moistened with a strong
solution of sulphate of soda, and placed
on a stantl or clip so that the light from
the lamp will be focused on it by tho
globe. The image of the glass will
thus bo thrown on a screen when the
lens is properly adjusted. The forma
tions of the crystals of the sulphate of
soila will be seen clearly on the screen,
and appear like the magical crowth of a
forest. Any ingenious family can
readily devise a great number of inter

Mr. Dennis O'Kecfe, of Raymond, Iowa,
says: My wife had rheumatism for the
past Jour or fivo years. I procured a bot

bad the same happy result. Mr. Peter

that St. Jacobs Oil cured him of rheuma

and in five minutes I was cured. It is the

A singular eiraimstaneo is reported
from a hot, dry valley in New South
Wales. Last year the drought there
was of long duration, and tho denizens
of the apiaries suffered much from it.
This year tho bees have made provision
against a similar emergency. They
have filled a largo number of the ex
ternal colls in every hive with pure
water instead of honey. It is thought
that tho instinct of the little creatures
leads them to anticipate a hot summer.

Curtis Andrews and his wife have liv
ed together for sixty years in Carolina
county, Maryland, nnd have never quar
reled. When asked for the secret of
their domestic happiness, the old man
replied: ' Well, I have always noticed
that there is always more trouble be
tween man and wife over making the
fire in the morning than anything else.
If they can get along smoothly about
that everything else is smooth. My
wife and I went to housekeeping to
gether in our log cabin nigh fifty years
ago. We've only got one fireplace, but
that's a big one. When wo moved in I
said to her, 'Sally, I'll make tho tiro
and I'll 'tend to it.' I made that fire,
nnd it's been binning ever since. For
nigh fifty years I've covered that tire be
fore going to bed, nnd I'vo fixed it up
iu the morning. I've never had any
matches in the house, and there aro
never any sulphur smells in the house
hold. While, that tire burns, sir, there
is peace in Cuitis Andrews' home."
