ANNUAL STATEMENT OF THE EQUIT
ABLE LIFE ASSUKANCE SOCIETY;
NEW YORK. JAN. 1st, 1881.
Assets, $41,108,602; an increase of
more than -Three Million Dollars in
1880.
Surplus, $9,228,29-1; an increase of
One aud Three-quarter Millions of Dol
lars in 1880.
New Business, $35,170,805: an in
crease of Eight and a half Million Dol
lars in 1880.
Amount paid to PoMcy-lioltlers and
their representatives during- 1880,
$4,792,937.
A liberal surrender value in paid-up
insurance is provided for in all ordina
ry policies, in case of forfeiture.
Tontine Savings Fund Policies may
be terminated at the close of certain
defined periods, on terms more advan
tageous than upon any other plan.
These policies prove more profitable to
the policy-holder than any other form
of insurance.
Actual examples can be furnished at
the Society's office, of persons beiDg in
sured for ten years, and then upon
terminating their Tontine Policies, re
ceiving cash in some instances equal to
the whole of the premiums paid ; in
others, nearly all.
No technicalities nor arduons condi
tions in policy coutracts.
policies incontestable after having
been in force for three years. All such
Incontestable policies Mill be paid at
maturity, without rebate of interest,
immediately after the receipt at the
Society's office in New York of satisfac
tory proofs of death, together with a
valid and satisfactory discharge trom
the parties in interest, and without re
quiring any delay, even for sixty or
ninety days, as has been the custom
heretofore, and is still usual with other
companies.

Alexander county, met In regular session,
at the court house in the city of Cairo, on
Monday, tho 7th day ot March, A. I).,
1881.

Tlie minutes of last regular meeting were
read and approved.

a statement of taxes tor the year 1874, due
from the New Orleans, St. Louis and Chi
cago ltlilroad Co., which tax, as per said
statement, including interest uinouuts to
thu sum i,l $y;)7.00, accompanying said
statement is the receipt of the sheriff for
f 500, of said amount, leaving a balance
still duo of $137, which said sheriff is hero
by instructed to collect, and a bill of Line-
gar and Lansdin for $100, balance due for
legal services in said suit allowed.
The following petitions praying for tho
locating and relocating certain roads in the
county, were presented to the board, each
ol said petitions being signed by the re
quisite numler of legal voters residing
within 5 miles of said proposed changes,
aud the board being advised that all the
other reqirements of law have been com
plied with, it is:
Ordered, that tho following named per
sons be appointed viewers to examine the
ground for said projwsed routes, and make
reports thereon at the next session of tho
Ixmrd.
For u road at Thebes, commencing
at the corner of block numbered six
thence running due south three hundred
lcet to Poplar street, thence running due
west three hundred and sixteen feet to
Fourth street, thence south-westerly about
five hundred feet to the county road, said
road to bo located without any cost to the
county for right of way. Viewers appoint
ed are S. Marchildon, Martin Drowu and
Henry l'lanert.
To re-locate a portion of the Dongola
and ThelHJS road in the Elco precinct, as
follows: Commencing at the crnuiiig of
tins Ciiln and Cape Girardeau road, near
the residence of A. J. Thompson, and lo
cate the same where it ia now used across
the land of said A. J. Thompson, and to
intersect the old road a little north of the
residence of George Thompson. Tho view
ers are J. E. McC'rite, J. B. Vick and W
F. Dickerson.
And to re-locate a portion of the Thebes
and Wetaug road in the aforesaid Elco
precinct, and near the residence of Geo
W. Freeze, as follows : Commencing at the
north-east corner of section number 20,
township 14, range 1, west, running south
one quarter ot a mile, thence westerly about
four rods, thence southerly about twenty
rods to the Ullin and Thebes road, said
new road to be made a good and passable
one, and free from all expense to tho
county.
The board appointed as viewers: Joseph
Frost, Moses Lentz and Leroy Thomas.
The following reports of inquests, holt
by Coroner R. Fitzgerald, were presented,
examined, approved and ordered of record,
viz:
Moses Justus, Dec. 10th, 1880; Robt.
Ilurtman, Dec. 18th, 1880; all tecs paid
out of the effects of deceased.
Unknown female infant, Jan. 6th, 1881;
Leonard A. Gruver, Feb. lQth, 1881.
The floor ot tho bridge across Cache riv
cr, nt Unity, was reported to the board us
being in an unsalo and dangerous condi
tion, whereupon Commissioner Briley was
authorized to have the same repaired, and
at the lowest expense to the county.
The petitions and 1 Kinds of Eliza Wil
bourn and Benjamin F. Curtis for permis
sion to keep a grocery at Hodges Park, in
the Unity precinct, wcro presented to the
board, nnd the board being tally advised
therein, on motion, the same wcro approv
cd, and the clerk is hereby authorized to
issue to said Eliiea Wilboum and Benjamin
F. Curtis the necossarj liconso, upon their
filing tho treasurer's receipt for- the
amount therefor.
The hoard thereupon proceeded to the
examination of claims against the county,
pending which it adjourned until to-morrow
at 8:30 o'clock.

The board met pursuant to adjourment.

Tho bill ot T. F. HargiB, amounting to
$12.7i, forserviees as county constable, was
presented to the board, and on motion re
jected, there being no provisions in law
making tho county liable for tho samo, ,
Andrew Naw, of Road District No. 3;
John Reams, of No. 17, and A. J. Bunch,
of No. 19, who at tho last session of
tho board wcro appointed road
supervisors for said districts, having
given good nnd sufficient reasons for not bo
ablo to Bcrvo as such supervisors, they wcro,
on motion, excused, and the following per
sons appointed in thoir place, and tho clerk
is hereby instructed to notify them accord
ingly, viz:

for district No. 19. '
The balance of tho day was occupied in
examining and allowing claims against the
county.
And for all claims allowed at this ses
sion of the board, including per diem and
mileage of members and clerk, "excepting
those payable from tho road and bridge
fund, for which demand warrants shall be
drawn," tho clerk is hereby authorized and
directed to draw warrants on tho treasurer
of the county against, and in anticipation
of the collection of the taxes tor the year
1880.
