An item of considerable amportance to
steainlxiatmen was developed this morning.
Capt. James O. Wood, ot the tow-boat
Grand Lake No. 2, it appears, hired his
leek crew previous to aiaking hia last trip
to New Orleans at $35 per month, and the
men all signed for their pay at that rate,
while lying here yesterday. There were
two men, however, witbi whom the captain
had made no stipulated agreement, and
who shipped on the boat after all the
others had engaged, and when their money
was handed them they refused and de
manded $40 per month. This Capt. Wood
declined to pny, when these two men went
to the custom house md swore out a libel
against the boat, and later on tho caso was
tried before Commissioner Merriweather,
who, after hearing tho particulars, which
were in accordance with the alovc, held
that in the absence ot the boat's shipping
papers she was responsible to the men for
wages at the highest rates paid by any
boat during tho throo months preceding
tho filing of the suit, and as it was shown
that $10 was tho highest rate, so ho would
find for the plaintiffs. After these cases
were settled the other members of his crew
demanded tho samo wages and and to
avoid any further trouble Capt. Wood or
dered it paid, and then tho boat took a new
crew and went on to Pittsburg. Tho find
ing of the commissioner is denounced by
towboat men and others , as an outrago on
all rules governing tho private affairs of
steamboats, as it tends to bo the causes of
luturc trouble with all crows. Louisville
