There are tales that aro old, yet will

Hticceeding generations of children tu
whom granny's "once upon a tirao" is
alluring, and thene aro fairy tales.
Very few of them aro original, coming
most of them from very old traditions,
and some of them being folk-lore tales.
Almost all the familiar stories of our
childhood are found in varied versions,
each nation claiming iu own. The
tale of "Beauty and the Boast" is one
example of this. Of this we must seek
the germ far away in the fifteenth cent
ury aruoug the poet minds of Italy) in
tho earliest version the hero is born a
young prince, but by the malevolent
fairies who assembled upon the occa
sion, ho was transformed Into a pig;
in this early story, as in the one famil
iar to us, he was fortunate enough to
win the love of a noble maiden, whose
afTcclion broke the spell, and he lii'ed
happy ever after. Two centuries luer
tlio same legend appears in French lit
erature under the name of "Prkice
Mareassin," the original plot being
carried out with slight modifications
anil additions. It was still later before
the present form and tho title of the
"Beauty and the Beast" (la Belle it la
Bete) were given; these urst occur in
tho old book called "Contes Marcus,"
a collection of stories supposed to have
been told by an old servant in a fimily
on their way to San Domingo. Xw
Experiment in Joint Stock Agricaltore,
An experiment in joint stock agri

be composed of such practical noble
men as the Duke of Buckingham and
Lord Dacre, and the directors include
such agriculturist its Mr. Stratton, the
well-known cattle-breeder. It is in

farms, in various counties, and to cul

tho ruost improved prinoiplos. Each
group will bo intrusted to the caro of a
manager whnso local experienco will
render him specially able todoal witn
the laml in question. Particular afon

to the rearing and feeding of cattle,

gardening and to fruit culture. The
company will endeavor to establish a
comprehensive system of transport
from tho several" groups of farm to
market towns, and so f:tr as is possiblo,
the produce of the farm, dairy and
garden will be sold direct to the con
sumer. Many practical men believe
that at present English farms are neither
large enough nor small enough, and
that in future good results will be de
rived from small gardnrt farms, and
also from large joint stock farms. It ia
very probahlo that at tho outset the
promoters of tho above schemo' will bo
ublfl to make capital terras with the
landlord'', as so many farms aro now
unoccupied, and as such tenants would
not only bo safe, but would greatly im
