the better protection of life and property
and providing remedies, which was re
ferred to them November 1st, report that
in their opinion the present ordinance pro
vides for all tho points of this ordinance,
and, therefore, report the samo.back with
Aldermen Patier and Pettit appeared in

ceived from Thomas J. Kerth, city treasur
er, the sum of twenty-two hundred sixty

property owners on Levee street and resi
dents of the city, asking the city to causo

sidewalk, with curbing and guttering in
front of blocks two and three, city of Cairo,
between Fourth and Eighth streets, along
Levee Ktreet in Raid city.

Clerk rend petition of Woman's Club
and Library association, of Cairo,- Ills.,
which represented the growing demand in
this city for the establishment and mainten
ance of a free public library aud reading
room, nnd also representing tho existence
of a well selected library of general litera
ture of about fifteen hundred volumes
known na "The Cairo Public Library," the
property of tho above association, and en
tirely free from indebtedness. The associ
ation desires to donate said library to tho
city of Cairo (in conformity with tho pro
visions of the revised statutes of Illinois,
chapter 81, entitled libraries) as tho founda
tion for a freo public library and reading
room. And respectfully petition that a
tax of ono mill on tho dollar be levied for
the proper maintenance of said library and
reading room. For tho success of said
library, tlieytleem it unreasonable to ask,
that of tho nine directors to bo appointed,
four at least be women, three of of whom
shall bo chosen from this association so
long ns it shall exist, and tho remainder
from the representative women of the city,
from whom, in cuso of tho dissolution of
said association, said directors (four or
more) shall be appointed. Iu considera
tion of I he acceptance of tho proposition
the association will cheerfully donate its
valuable library for tho improvement and
advantage of said city of Cairo.

twenty-three in all.
Alderman Wood moved to receive peti
tion, and that it he referred to tho finance
committee with instructions to report tho
law relating to libraries, and the probable
cost of maintaining same.

in the opera house association, asking that
in Consideration of the construction of a
sidewalk on the westerly side of Ruilroad
street, from Sixth to north end of opera
house, that an extension of the said side
walk be ordered and continued to Eighth
street at as early a day as possible.
