frugal and thrifty. He got on well, laid

in tho early tw ilight, before entering the

her life anew to (J'od. Sho vowed most
solemnly in these words: "If the Lord
does bless me at. this olaee, the poor
shall have a share of it.
That grand act of consecration was
the perm of a lifwof marvelous nobility.
It was the law of this home for in:uiy
years, while sons were born and grew
up under its ennobling influence. John
Crossley died loavin a comfortnblo
property and a good name. The widow
lived on to old age, and would never
consent to remove from her first home
to a better one. Tho sons carried
on their father's business, educated nnd
controlled by the spirit of the mother's
early vow. 'Ono of the youngest sons
became a iiaronet ami a member of I'ar

American nriuy ofliecrs whose superi
ors, or the superiors of w hose superiors,
have attained tn the age of 02 are now
trembling wiih excitement lest the Sen
ate should fail to act on the bill retiring
all ollii.ers at that age. There seems to
be no opposition to the scheme, and
there is little fear that the bill will fail
if it ever gets before the Senate, but
Senator Logan's illness has caused some
delay. Of course there is no specilio
aire nl which an officer becomes inenpa
ble of performing bis duties, and w here
thero is masked disability officers are
retired now without regard to ago. Hut
it is claimed that the young officers
ought to have a belter chance for pro
motion than they now have, nnd there
is a good deal of force in the argu
ment that if retirement were com
pulsory in the army, as it is in the
navy, there would he less room than
there now is for favoritism. At the age
nf ti'J few officers have any lon period
of possible activity before them. If one
age is to be determined on for all, that
is perhaps as fair and reasonable an age
as any. Hut an officer of a low grade
is really superannuated earlier than an
(illieer of a high grade; that is the du
ties of a general and a captain (filler so
that there is quite as much reason for
retiring a captain ut M as there is for
retiring n general at J-2, This plan of
retirement on a sliding scale seems to
have received little or no attention in
Congress. Tho retired list of the Amer
ican army wan headed with no less il
lustrious a name than that of (ieneral
Wintield Scott, who was 70 when the
civil war began. There was no doubt
about his superannuation then, but ho
peached the fatal ngo of ti2 during tho
Mexican war, when he showed no seri
ous impairment of bodily or mental vig
or. Admiral Farragut was CO when tho
