The Cincinnati Commercial says:
Now that Generals Pope and Mackenzie
have been awarded the coveted Major

were left out in the cold are buny figur
ing upon their chances for promotion
when the next vacancy occurs in the

course of events the eleven General of

Heading the Eyes.
According to a fanciful American
phrenologist round-eyed persons see
much, live much in the seties, but think
less. Narrow-eyed persons, on the
other hand, seo'lesR, but think and feel
more intensely. It will bo oloerved that
the eyes of children are open and round.
Their whole life is to receive impres
sions. It is only when childhood is
maturing toward manhood and woman
hood that tnougtit comes it U nunes ai
all. But what most leads to rehVction?
Experience. Our errors, our short-comings,
our failures these truth us to
think before we act, to consider each
step, to weigh every motive. When,
therefore, the upper eyelid for it is that
which has the greatest amount of mo
bilitydroops over the eye, it indicates
not merely reflection, but something
painful to reflect about. H-nce the
length or drooping of the upper eyelid
betokens confession and penitence.
The drooping of half of the eyelids
from the outer angle to the center indi
cates the disposition to confess one's
faults to parents or seniors, to a "father
The drooping of half of the eyelids
from the inner angle to the center be
tokens the disposition to repent and to
"do works meet forrepentance." Close
ly allied to these signs are thoso of
prayerfulness and humility. The form
er is indicated by the musclo which
turns the eye directly downward, ns rep
resented in the pictures of tho Madon
na. Prayerfulness is usually large in
connection with that of penitence, tho
reason of which Is that between tho
faculties of penitence aud humility there
is the same close connection bs between
confession and prayer. One who has
habitually more prayer than humility
has the eye turned somewhat upward,
ho that the upward part of the iris is a
little covered by the upper eyelid ami
ho as to leave a slight space between
the iris and the lower lid. Tho t everso
is true of otic who has more humility
Tho faculty of truth that is, tho love
of it is indicated by tho musclo which
surrounds the eye, causing Mils and
wrinkles. Justice is indicated by the
muscle which causes tho iiorpendieulnr

ness and wrinkles under the eye, for
which somo persons are remarkable, in

angle or the eye ami eyeurow indicate
probity or personal truthfulness. There
nre t.liren de.L'rees of tho faculty of ins-
lice. The first is a kind of exactness, or
strict honesty in small money matters,
which some people would call clo.tonoss,
nnd is indicated by a singular perpen
dicular wrinkle or lino between the eye
brows. The second is a disposition to
require justice in others, aud is indi
cated by two perpendicular linos or
wrinkles, one oti each side of tho contet
a very common sign, The third do

tion to npply the rule of justice to ono's.

manders, in masters ami teachers, and

clsing authority. In those who itro
wanting in tho power to command und

signal is also absent. Tho faculty ol

of justice, which reprimands or requires
others to do right, and both togothei

A western man has been telling soum

He says he went off into tho mountains
