is the tilli' of a largo illiirtrntr-d treatise,
by Dr. H. V. Pierce, Hullulo, N Y., sent
to any addrefs for three Hltinins. It tench
es Buca-Silul uelf-treittment.
If Burdatta Were a Mule.
No wonder the mule is a kicker.
Were I a mulo, lore, I, too, would kick.
Every time I got a chance I would lift
somebody higher thun a kito. I know
just exactly wluitkind of a mule I would
be. A baby mule. One of these siul
eyed old fellows that leiin back in tho
breeching find think. With striped lege
like a zebra. And a dark brown streak
down my buck, and a paint brush tail.
And mv mane cut short, and my forotop
bangRif, and a head as long us a Hour
barrel, and I'd bo worth two hundred
and a half in any market, and I'd wear
a flat harness and no blinders, iind some
day, when sotno man hitched nio up to
a nray, and piled on a ton and a half of
pig iron, a cord of wood, six barrels of
Hour, a good load of household goods
and a steamboat boiler. I would start
off with it patiently, and haul it steadily
until I got to the topof the grade on tho
new road around North Hill, and right
about there and then a falling maple
leaf, fluttering down ia a spark of gold
and crimson, would scare mo all but to
death, and tho authorities would havo
to drag the Mississippi river m weeks
to Iind all of that load and some of thai
driver, while, in three minutes after the
euieulo 1 would be tranquilly browsing
on tlio grassy heights that smile above
tho silver flowing river. That is tho
kind of a mulo I would bv.llawkxyc.

Life in tha Army.
It is mere holiday work in tho service
of tho iMiropeau nations compared with
ours; they havo long periods of rest,
Mvith largo bodies of their troops of all
arms quartered 111 lino cities, in splendid
barracks, where they arc almost in as
full enjoymont of all the good things of
life as the citizens, while with us our
lives, in a measure, aro passed cut off
from almost everything that enhances
life to the most humble. In my persou
al experience 1 havo been eleven years
straight wit hout a single clay from active
duty. I have not been in New York
city for twenty years, and not further
East than Washington since 1806. I
havo been stationed at po.its where we
wero from 2.30 to 400 miles from a rail
road, and at one, of which wo did not
taste even so common a vegetable as po
tatoes for six months, beef, bacon, bread,
coffee and tea being our constant diet
from Christmas to Christmas. My Cap
tain nud myself once paid 815 for one
barrel of potatoes, and divided them for
our family use, all of us being absolute
ly starvoct for a potato. Egga are $1 a
dozen. Butter uot to be had at even
$1 a pound, and everything else in tho
same ratio. I could give you many such
incidents regarding tho social life of our
army oflicors ou the 'frontier," and the
official lifo was one everlasting go
scouting scouting scouting VV intor
and Summer, Spring aud Fall. My dear
sir. there is not one person in tea thou
sand of our population knows anything
about the hardships and self-denials
which our little army undergoes, and
many thinK it is all holiday work, wear
ing fine clothes and living on the fat of
tho land. Tho life of a lino officer on tho
frontier is enough to wear out any man
in twenty rears active and continuous
service. Vet tho country needs it, and
patriots do it for, after all, what is the
reward? I am sure it is not a big thing
financially, and it does seem hard that
we have to pray and besoech so hard for
what wo do get. Look at what Congress
did last M'ssiou in the faco of a prayer
sent them by three-fourths of the army
officers asking for a little rolief and very
littto at thatP We aro worse off than wo
wero before. Retirement at tho age of
64, with a limited retired list, is no boon
at all, and the very branch of the sef
vico that needs it most gets the least. I
