there are beautiful possibilities, but in
m st of what has gone before the discern
ing eye see nothing but a craving . for
queering, which fives good evidence that
feat brio power is lacking. To tell the
whole truth, moreover, theie thoughts are
not entirely novel. They have been seen
before, but Mils seis m aro taken up and
wafted on wings of popularity to hih po
sition. Frtqucot !urditv ensues, of
course, fir w'.ut more abaurd than a shott

draw C'Mic! unions.
HUtlKS IS BLACK.
What more aosunl than to dress a baby
in black s:lk stocking Yet it is doue,
and thought no very, very stylish. Fashion
indeed tl.tucea quite a whirl io black silk
btockii), no I ttiey may bo pronounced as
all the go. Second to black come solid
colors in stylish shades, such as crushed
strawberry, crabbed raspberry, etc.j while
ranking tliirlty are alternating trip' of
two colors. Now wliat has been siid of
stockings le tds up to the fact that black
and white are to b especially fashionable.
When I sty "white," however, do not un
dersttnd me an always meaning "white."
Mucti oftener, such soli i white, tailing un
der the head of cream white, that one is
set thiukinir, and wonders if that cream
might not have been saved over from
Noah's art. Yet there will be pretty mus
lins, dotted, sprigged, beetarred, white
enough to be ia good taste; to lay nothing
qf the immense family of "veilings" which
have quite supplanted the bunting tribe
which overran us some seasons ago. Black
gloves will be often worn to match the
black silk stockings; but Fashion is con
sistently queer in clinging to muddy tans,
and they Kill 'give finish to many a dainty
toilette, though yellow and terra cotta are
still in vogue. The subject of color being
touched upon, one sees in fancy the vari
YELLOW TOP KNOTS
ou bonnets that are so numerous and so
piquant that the staidest Methodist
person might feel impressed thereby.
Sotuetiims a single bright yellow ball is
set extctly on top of a flat capote,
with wlHt singular result! one may
imagine. Again, there may be a cluster of
three or four bills, or one or two small
ostrich tips do duty. Sometimes these or
nametitions are set on the side, but tbey are
nothing if not a very bright orange color;
frequently a reddish orange. When the
flowery kingdom incident on Spring opena
fairly on us, we may expect notable peculi
arities from this sudden rushing after very
bright yellow, and as a forecast I can mon-
tion a broad-brimmed straw where a verita
ble bank or bright yellow blossoms iwept
io an almost entire circuit. What shall be
laid, too, regarding long silk gloves of
bright orange color? Shall they not cause
too good Methodist dignitary to stare, and
not only he, but divines of alt degree! who
gather to our May anniversaries! To bright

summer, and when shown this season they
fail to make much Impiesslun. y mid
summer we shall get used to orange color,
but by the time we get used to a thing it is
about time lor it to be a possible thing no
longer. It is the time for it to be laid away
to give place to the next impossible looking
Beyond a doubt, spiders are fashionable.
Great, crawling spiders, tver so big, with
evor so many sprawling legs. Tbey nestle
among scsrfs, pin together kerchisfs, stand
as solitary sentinels in finish to standing
linen collars, or sprawl on the loft side of
the corsage or on a bonnet. Hugs do the
same, and indescribable creatures of un
known species. All are welcome, provided
they are large enough, Lave legs enough,
and are of metal. Not many together, but
one aloue, showing off conspicuously. Then,
too, we have pio sod pins. Stack here,
there, anywhere, and coming in convenient
ly where a bug or spider, would be incon
venient. Pins of gold, silver, colored metal,
r tiny bugs or blossoms pretending to be
pins. Like the sticking ot pins, bowevor,
comes now the reflection that I have told
you really nothing practical about Spring
clothes, aod you will think your correspon
dent as queer as Fashion herself. In apol
ogy, let me say I have presumed each one
of you to be provided with Lord & Taylor's
Spring catalogue, where the ground is cov
ered so completely, that, driven from the
field, I take refuge in telling you only of
queer things. Yet I do now bethink roe of
something practical. Briggs' transfer
papers, which in this age of braiding and
embroidery are a benediction, You put
down one of these transfer designs, run a
warm iron over It, and behold your pattern
traced, w hether it be a monogram on your
true love's handkerchief, a pair of slippers
for your clerical adviser, a pinafore for baby
a dress for yourself, or a tidy for the good
man's chair. Everything is provided. Kate
Greenaway designs, crosses, and I know
not what, for church work; sprays, vines,
while still greater variety is given by pat
terns for cross-stitch. An attractive book
filled with newest designs is given sway,
and that, together with patterns can be
found at leading wool and fancy stum.
