The principal crops are wheat, oats and barley. Thirty bushels of wheat aud fifty of oats and bar lev are often ruined. Nine miles further north is the little em of a town called Loveland, located iu the Big Thompson valley. This too, is a fine agricultural re gion. Further on, eixten miles, is the town of Ft. Collins, a place ot some fifteen hundred inhabitants. The State Agricul tural College is located here. Like all the valleys in northern Colorado, the valley ot the Poudre is noted for its productivenens Grain a id hay aro the principal productrj Alonvr the loot hills quite a number ot sheep and cattle ranches are located, the stock raniiiiiL' mostly in the mountains. Onward speeds trie iron horse and we tike rest at "Siint'a He.st," the fdiued town oldrceley, la vrela county, ono. litis is indeed a most beautiful place. 'Vlie town is well laid out, wide streets, a grove ot beautiful trees overshadows the town Here has been demonstrated practically Horace Greeley's words: "Oa west young man, go west." Yes, Oreely wis the msti gator of the movement to go west and build ud a town where the standard of social citizenship should be brought up to higher moral aspect than is usually found in western towos. Fourteen years ago this town site was barren waste covered with cactus. Pioneers full ot hope and courage commenced the task of building a town and place of refuge where King Alcohol should not dare to nlaut the standard of his ignoble ensign. Twice his emissaries made the effort to cet a foothold but as often had to make an inglorious retreat. Not a saloon has ever marred the fame of tho town and to-dsy Greeley is a monu ment of no little magnitude, demonstrating the fact that a town can be built on tern pcranco principles. There is not to-day a town in Colorado being blest with a build ing boom as is now g)ing on here. A num ber of fine buildings are going up. The new stone depot is a marvel of beauty, tho flue 10,000 public school house is an orna mcnt to the town. The number of churches is an index to the character of the people. One thing noticeable here is the absence of bummers and loungers. Such characters call Greeley a dull town and like fish out of water c&u't survive long, or at least "hunt pastures new, more congenial to their low qualities. A walk through the streets gives oue an idea of the business done here it crowded stores in large brick blocks is any evidence. Waiting for the train is one of the miseries of this last age but now that time is about up we hope to be off westward bound, where amid the wilds of Wyoming we shall seize our taber and give notes by the way. J . S. I . The Percentsg of Aotiva Old Men oa the hcroasB. In a yoiinj country like this, where life is continually at fever heat, and where fiction rather than reflection car ries the dny, old age seeni3 out of place. In the staid old towns and cities of England, Jl.-nvthoi'tie tells us in li is "Old Home," that ho observed that old age clime forth nioro cheerfully and generally into the suushino than among ourselves, whero the rush, stir, bustle and irreverent energy of youth aro so preponderant tiitit the poor forlorn grandsires begin to doubt whether they have a right to breathe in such a world anv longer, and so bido their silvery heads in solitude. But "fust" as this country aiul this period both proverbi ally are, it is a fact that tho percentage of old men who continue in aetivo life, and who do not show thoir years except to a close scrutiny, is on tho iucrea.su. Erect and active' octogenarians, even, are not unknow n on our streets, whoso appearance still makes theio, pass cur rent as being in the executive period of life. Tho eonsiani improvement in tho average stlo of living m tho matter of dwelling, food and raiment, perceptibly promotes longevity and increases tho number of cases of it. i'o.sfOf Jlera'd.
