Miss Lizzie May Ulmer, a now candi
date for public favor, will appear at the
Opera House Friday night next, November
2, in the only authorized edition of Mr. and
Mrs. McKee Runkin's great success "4!i,"
a play based upon lifo in Caliloruia. Mias
Uluier comes to us highly recommended
by the press of Canada and the south.
In Philadelphia, Miss Miller brought
suit against Mr. Beck lor breach of promise
of marriage. She said bo had kissed her a
little more than 100,000 times, and the
jury gave her a verdict of $1,008.33, or a
cent a kiss. Mr. Beck could save money
by getting a contract to accompany Gen.
Sherman at the school commencement.
What is the matter with the crossing
at 5th street on Commercial avenue? The
mud is not over a foot deep at that place
and pedestrians who are caught on the
west side of the avenue and have bubiueps
in the middle of the block on the east have
the privileyeof walking a block or two out
of their way or of wading through the mud.
A gentleman out in Howell county,
Mo., caught a flock of young quails last
spring. His efforts to domesticate them, it
seems, have proved very successful. The
birds feed and chirp about his premises
gentle as chickens, and it is said they havo
a very interesting knack of imitating al
uiobt every bird they hear. The only evi
dence of their wild nature is a habit they
have of flying away daily, always coming
back regularly at the proper time.
A talented dramatic critic in San An
tonio laments that the new play Black
Dwarf, as exhibited in that town, lacked
all the efemmts necessary for a spectacular
bucccss. Still, "in many parts the per
formers were loudly applauded and in some
cases encored" by the San Antonians. From
this it may be inferred that even the Texas
edition of the Black Dwarf is not wholly
deficient in the anatomical attractions that
make the Black Crook famous.
Englishmen must have increased their
taste for supping on horrors. The follow
ing advertisement is clipped from the Lon
don Sporting Life aud shows a faith in
morbid eentiments beyond anything heard
of even In the Ouiteau days:

The Opera IIoi be was filled last niht
by an intelligent and appreciative audience
to witness Frederick Warda's presentation
of "Virgioius." Mr. Warde'a reputation as
an actor had preceded him to Cairo, and
the high expectations of the audience were
more than realized. From first to last he
was the recipient of most unequivocal ad
miration. There is nothing of the staj;e
rant aud noise in his acting; nothing stilt
ed, and nothisg overdone. Everything
was so real that the people were carried
away back to the days of old R ime, and
made, for the time being, a looker on with
the people of those old days at the life and
misfortunes of the heroic father whose
character he so powerfully delineated.
Mr. Warde in this as in all his great char
acters, is "entirely independent, heimitates
no one. His style and treatment of sub
jects is his own and stamp him as one of
the great leaders of dramatic art. His sup
port was excellent throughout, and his com
pany is undoubtedly the best that has ever
visited Cairo. To-night "Hamlet" will be
put on the stage as it never has been and
may never again be in Cairo.
The supt. of the Zoological Gardens, Mr.
Harry Piper, of Toronto, says: "My case
was aggravated rheumatism. I cured my
self by the great St. Jacobs Oil."
"NIP AND TUCK."
As will be seen by our adveitising col
umn, Harry Webber again returns to Cairo
after an absence of two years with that in
imitable side splitting, button bursting
comedy, "Nip and Tuck," which in Febru
ary,1881, produced more of a sensation than
any play ever introduced hero. The plot,
the fun, the grotesque situations, in the
attempt of one partner of tho firm of Nip &
Tuck to outwit and overreach the other,
all combined produce a comedy which is
simply immense.

woman! is she beautiful? I hardly
know; but sho is the most bewildering,
bewitching, fascinating of all Eve's
daughters. There is a magic in her
step, a poise of foot, a grace of rhyth

dark eye; a something voluptuous
which is yet chaste; a magic in her
smile, such as no other race or clime
can show. Beautiful? A man whoso
blood runs red within his veins may see
beauty elsewhere, but ho has never felt
the perfect charm of woman's woman

One little girl who had lived in Lon

expense of a. "fresh air fuud." She
clung to one of the teachers in dreadful

imagine what such a green thing could
be. "Why don't it keep sail?" she said,
in a paroxysm of terror, as the w ind

aftertomo time that she could be induc
